Unfortunately, what with the memorial match yesterday, the Walton game and a Reserves game on Tuesday, the website will not be updated until at least Wednesday.
However, here is Greg's Ashford report:
Godalming Town 2-0 Ashford Town
Ryman Division 1 South
Saturday 23rd August 2008
Godalming secured their first win of the season against an underwhelming Ashford side with first half goals from centre forwards Glen Stanley and Kenny Ojukwa. The away side dominated from the kick off until Godalming grabbed a surprise lead after thirteen minutes. Chris Wales played a perfectly weighted ball through the Ashford defence to Glen Stanley who turned the last defender before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far side of Jamie Riley’s goal.
Despite a weak start Godalming were boosted tremendously by being in front and they took hold of the game with Wales heading over from Stanley’s cross before Stanley himself had another chance shooting low at Riley after capitalising on Danny Lye’s loss of concentration. However Ashford came close to a spectacular equaliser when Ryan Briggs, with the outside of his boot, curled a spinning shot towards the top corner only for Matt Mann to leap full stretched and palm the ball away from goal. Minutes later at the other end of the pitch, Jamie Riley pulled off a similar save to Mann’s from Brahim Eloumani’s fierce shot from a long Richard Taylor throw. Kenny Ojukwa made it 2-0 just before the whistle for half time with a simple header from Richard Brightwell’s near post corner. Poor defending from Ashford allowed Ojukwa to gain space and from three yards out Ojukwa headed home his third goal in as many games.
Chuck Martini made several changes in the second half including handing a debut to Bernard Asante who looked threatening on the break. With ten minutes to go, Godalming knew they had done enough to stop any dramatic comebacks and they could have had a couple more goals to add to their tally with Brahim Eloumani missing a fantastic chance, wonderfully made by the hard working Glen Stanley. Bernard Asante had two chances to cap his debut with a goal but he failed on both occasions to test the goalkeeper whilst through on goal. Substitute Liam Pestle also had a good chance to put the icing on the cake, but after imaginative work from Asante, Stanley and Eloumani, Pestle skewed his shot wide to leave Godalming with a well deserved, comfortable home win.
Godalming: Mann, Hall (Mariner), Eloumani, Patterson, Matthews, Taylor, Wales, Brightwell, Stanley, Haddad (Pestle), Ojukwa (Asante)
Subs not used: Dudley, Thompson
