My thoughts (not necessarily what everyone else at the club thinks) on the last post by 'an interested observer':
You are right about the risk involved in the contracts and I know the club is aware of this. That is why the people concerned in drawing up the contracts are taking advice from lots of different people to make sure it is done properly. There is also the risk of not having players on contract that we could later command a fee for. Maybe not a great amount but if, say Brahim, was wanted by another club we would be able to raise some valuable funds for the club by transfering him. I believe we have missed out in the past so I think we should be careful not to do so again. But this must be handled carefullly and I know that everyone appreciates that.
I don't think that Elliott and Mazza are given no reward for their committment. They are amongst the most popular people at the club. They also receive payment like all the other players. James was even awarded a special prize at the Dinner Dance last season for his committment and is regularly the team captain.
Some very interesting points have been raised in this thread but there has also been a lot of bitching which doesn't really do anyone any good. At the end of the day we all have the best interests of Godalming Town F.C. at heart.

It is good to know that decisions regarding the contracts is not being taken lightly but do you really consider the chance of maybe picking up a few hundred/thousand pounds in a transfer deal is really the reason for the contracts. I think the guaranteed service of the player is likely to be the overriding factor but that comes with the enhanced risks as previously discussed.
I agree with your comments regarding the stalwarts as I described them, they are indeed popular with fans and club officials alike but unfortunately they don't pick the team.
Those players who will be issued with contracts will be given a great deal of security and kudos which counts for a lot in the changing times of Godalming Town FC. I was just asking whether the stalwarts didn't deserve similar perks for their commitment?
As you say some interesting points have been made. Lets cut the bitching and get the club on a good footing both on and off the field.
Maybe this should be another thread but it all comes down to finances etc.
I wonder what the clubs plan is regarding promotion to level 3? Is there a 5 year plan to get the finances in place ready for possible ground improvements, wages and travel cost or are we blindly looking for promotion and hoping that all "that sort of stuff" will come out in the wash?

What has happened to the club this year? Roger and Bev leaving. Chuck coming in and running the first team in isolation. Sarah the physio leaving. Les leaving. Sam leaving. Chris and Guy leaving. Dropping the under 16's. Gates so low. This looks like a club that's in serious trouble doesn't it? I hope the committee and especially the trustees find it in themselves to start making the right decisions, no matter how hard they are! We all want the club to be around in 5 years time.......... Am I the only one who is concerned??

As for what kevin shepheard has to say about the connection with Farncombe, if i was Roger i would feel very insulted as without his tireless work over many seasons there would never have been a youth set-up at GTFC let alone a ladies side. I know from experience the endless support he gave to the young players at the club and the opportunities he gave many to advance through the sides. I know i would not be playing were i am today without his most valuable guidance and support. So how about you lot being grateful for the foundation he laid down and then perhaps you WILL move forward as an established senior football club!!

No person is bigger than the club. Roger and Bev going so what the club has survived and gone on to better things. The Phyisio going, well phyisios have left before and can be replaced. The under 16 and 18 managers leaving, to be fair they haven't covered themselves in glory this season and have had a string of poor results. Chuck has done well this season and more importantly so have the players, despite what has gone on and what is going on they go out each game and play their hearts out, they express themselves and play without fear which under Roger they didn't. The Roger era has finished he served the club well but life goes on and the club goes on and i repeat nobody is bigger than the club

He probably got more of a hard time because he was my son.as for whoever takes over as u18s manager i wish him the best of luck for the future, you have got a great bunch of lads their, and i have been proud to manage them.Thank you for all your hard work and dedication lads. If you had taken the time to come and watch some of the matches or read the match reports then you would be able to make a valued oppinion. It is easy to sit in your chair and spout your oppinion, try getting off your bakside and doing.

Chris - I think everyone realises what a good job the U18's have done this season. The step up from U16 Sunday football to the Southern Youth League is a big one. Well done for a very solid season. I attended quite a few games and think it is great to see some of the players progressing into the Reserves - 4 played on Saturday for example. A season or two at this higher level and hopefully we may have some players capable of playing in the Southern League (or Ryman League or Unibond League at the rate we are going!).
Best of luck next season.

I find it interesting that everyone keeps saying let's stop bithcing and support the managers.
The very fact that there is feedback and discussion about the future of the club is exactly what I'd hoped.
As for the comments by Terry Guest - don't know who you are, but with an attitude like that, not sure I'd want to, would you like a saucer of milk?! I don't believe that anyone has said one man is bigger than the club and yes Roger has gone and I think even he would agree that he left at the right time, the club and Roger needed a change. However, DO NOT underestimate the hard work and time that Roger put into building the team and the club. Who can ever forget our MOST memorable double winning season! Which in fact made all of this possible!
Times have moved on and Chuck is at the helm now, all some of us are asking from him is that he widens his focus to the fortunes of the club, not just the first team. The club needs money to pay off it's debts and build a solid foundation for the future. If the reserves and u18's are doing well then more gate receipts, more money in the bar and the kitchen.
I look forward to the AGM and hearing about all the plans that the club has for next season and how it's going to achieve these goals, both financially and professionally!

Last season was a great season for us U16's we were backed by the club and very closely linked with Roger, this resulting in a league title. This season has been different, Chuck hasn't made one appearance at one of our games and made no signs of being interested at all.

i agree, but he did make one appearence to potentially the most unimportant game we played with 3 keepers in the starting line up. Missed our biggest game at woking. To be a good club, with no money, the cheapest way to do it, is use the youth! so they get rid of the U16s and possibly the U18s. 3 players from this years under18s got a regular game with the reserves but only when they were short. Are the reserves content with using players who are just happy with reserve team football? whats the point? godalming are missing out on some good players who are willing to step down a level at merrow just to play. im a big fan of godalming town evidence is seen that last season and this season captained the youth side, played regularly for the reserves last season, raising money for the club. But now feel that the U18s are just a waste of time, will next season be different? AND for the person who said we didnt achieve anything this season should open their eyes, we've improved, which is what our goal was.

Just to confirm; as mentioned in another thread the U18's will run next season and most likely in the Southern Youth League again.

Just like to say Chris and I ran the youth team our way rightly or wrongly, not everybody agreed with all our decisions but over two seasons I think we did most things right, having won the league last season and helping the players progress this season in both the youth league and reserve football. I personally think Chuck could have been involved more with the youth and reserve teams but I also understand the first team takes priorty and there is only so much one man can do. As far as the youth team is concerned I hope it does continue next year having originally saying I would stay but due to the commitment at Merrow (which hopefully most people will understand why Chris and I took on) and my work commitments I can no longer do. I have already let the club know I will do all I can to help out the new management team to assist in the transition period so they can continue to take forward what are a great bunch of lads including 3 or 4 from this years under 16's that Chris and I have already involved ready for next year.(Also showing we were planning ahead and not leaving the club in the S**t).And finally just to say we are not stealing any players they have all been told to make their own decisions even our own sons.
