Sandhurst 2 – 1 Godalming
This fixture brought the G’s team, second from the bottom of the league, on 4 points to the home of Sandhurst, the team second place in the league on 17 points, trailing only behind Jersey Bulls who look like they will run away with the league.
So, you could be forgiven for thinking that the G’s would play defensively and go out looking to put the shutters up and pack the defence, but no. Les started with Kenny Kassibante and Francis Sey as the wide men and I am delighted to say, the returning Donte Lodge Francis at number 9 and Jack Cleeveley at 10.
Richie Mbele and Ben Bauchop in the midfield Rory Sellick right back, Reegan Scotcher and Joe Lewis as the centre back pairing and Raisan Francis at left back. Jordan Knight in goal. On the bench were Ryan Villa, Jordan Cavender, Dom Hardisty, Saul Grant and Myles Townsend.
Things did not go well for the G’s as only ten minutes in to the game a high ball into the area was not cleared and was nudged on for an easy tap in from close range.
Despite that disappointment the G’s were still looking dangerous going forward. Kenny and Francis both looking sharp and making their markers struggle. The best chance of the half fell to Jack Cleeveley when on the edge of the 6-yard box the home keeper parried the ball to him, but Jack scuffed his shot and the ball rolled well wide.
Jordan had to make a save pushing the ball around for a corner when the home side broke.
Donte was doing well up front and worked his way to getting a shot in from the edge of the box that brought a good save from the home keeper.
Sandhurst number 23 got a yellow card following repeated fouls.
G’s 0 - 1 down at half time.
Joe Lewis then got a yellow card, pretty harshly for me, when he got his foot to the ball at waist height and won it clearly. I can only imagine that the ref felt his foot was too high.
Sandhurst number 15 then got a yellow card when he went straight through the back of Francis Sey, which left him needing treatment and eventually it led to him being subbed off with Ryan Villa coming on.
Ryan then got a yellow for a tackle, which again to me seemed a bit harsh as again he clearly won the ball.
Kenny got hauled down in the penalty area, but the ref was not having it as a penalty.
Kenny got forward down the left and crossed low, but Donte could not get a foot to it and the keeper put it round for a corner.
Having dominated the second half possession and territory G’s then succumbed to a second goal when trying to play the ball out from the back and we gave up possession.
Ryan made an impact once he came on for the clearly injured Francis and tormented the home defence on the right. He then got down the left and put the ball in low and there was a bit of a scramble in the 6-yard box before Kenny put the ball away to bring the score back to 1 – 2 with about 15 minutes to go.
The G’s were pressing and won plenty of corners. But could not capitalise. We also won a free kick just outside the area and Joe Lewis came up and hit it well past the wall, but the home keeper had it covered.
So frustrating again to have dominated the game in the second half, but not being able to get the equaliser that we deserved against a team that were suffering against the pace of our attack.
Yet again no points despite a strong performance. We have skill and pace in abundance all over the pitch so, if we can tighten up the defence a bit, we must get a few more wins under our belt before Christmas.
