Godalming 0 – 4 CB Hounslow (League Cup)
With the memories of that cracking 3 - 0 win on Saturday still fresh in our minds, we set off for this League Cup encounter against CB Hounslow from the CC Premier Div.
There were a good few familiar faces at the ground despite the heavy rainfall during the day and more rain forecast. There were some unfamiliar, but very welcome faces on the pitch.
From the squad sheet we could see that Darren and Rory were not available, unsurprisingly as both were injured on Saturday and that Francis Sey was listed on the bench, so maybe he was carrying a knock, or perhaps just being protected. He was wearing Graeme Purdy style flip flops, so it was clear he was not going to be on the pitch.
Ryan Villa was still suspended. George Peterkin was seen doing a few laps of the pitch but was wearing battle gear so hopefully he is nearing fitness and ready to join the fray.
Great to see that Reegan Scotcher was named amongst the starting line-up. We haven’t seen him with his boots on since he was injured late last season. Also, good to see that Charlie Chennel was also starting with more youngsters on the bench in the way of Saul Grant, Tom Gallagher, Jayden Moriobey. If any of these youngsters can show the same sort of promise that Jordan Cavender has since he first showed for the G’s at Rusthall we will be well pleased.
Interesting to see Dom Hardisty was making his debut in the midfield alongside Ben Bauchop and Richie Mbele. Jack Cleeveley was at No 10, Kenny Kassibante at number 9 and Jordan Cavender wide on the left. Reegan Scotcher was paired with Joe Lewis as centre backs and Charlie Chennel right back and the impressive Raisan Francis at left back.
The first half went really well for the G’s and their pace all around the pitch was giving the visitors a major problem.
Dom Hardisty showed a remarkable turn of pace, that most of us did not know he had. I am not sure that Dom knew he had it. Just hope he can find it again from time to time. He got past his marker down the right and delivered a good cross, but the G’s could not capitalise upon it.
After about 20 minutes Richie Mbelle got himself into position and he hit a fine shot that called for an equally good save from the visiting keeper getting down quickly at full stretch.
Kenny demonstrated his athleticism as he executed an overhead kick as the home side continued pressing the visitor’s goal. It spectacularly broke the silence of the night as the ball rebounded off the tin roof of the enclosure behind the goal at the training pitch end. Lots of pressure from the home side - but no goals.
The Hounslow keeper and their Manager were clearly not happy with their performance and they made a tactical substitution unusually after only 30 minutes.
Kenny got through on goal again and brought another good save from the visiting keeper minutes before half time.
Almost immediately after that Hounslow broke and although their forward was on his own and appeared to be being shepherded towards the goal line, he somehow got in a shot from wide of the goal that beat Jordan Knight, so we had to go in at half time. 0 – 1 down, much against the run of play. That old hoodoo again.
To make things worse it was only minutes after the restart when the G’s conceded again failing to get an adequate header to clear a cross, which fell fortunately for Hounslow right at their strikers’ feet. So now 0 – 2 down. Much to the visiting keeper’s delight as he showed off his dancing skills as he ran to the opposite end of the pitch to celebrate.
Joe Lewis picked up a yellow card.
More good chances for the G’s, but the lads could not find the final touch to score.
A major handling error and mix up in front of the CB Hounslow goal had us on our feet again, but frustratingly Kenny could not find a way to bundle the ball over the line.
Tom Gallagher came on at left back replacing Raisan.
CB Hounslow got a third goal to compound the G’s misery and to pretty well settle the result.
The G’s did not give up however and Jordan Cavender, who looked very dangerous all game, worked his way down the left and delivered a great ball into the box, where unfortunately Kenny could only pull his shot wide.
Richie got through again, but could not find the net.
,
Jayden Moriobey came on to replace Jordan Cavender.
Right at the death, whilst the ref was searching for his whistle, the G’s conceded a fourth goal, which rather flattered the visitors.
Once again a good first half and lots of chances, only to be thwarted by a goalkeeper on form.
C.O.Y.G’s.
