Godalming Town 6 – 0 Bagshot
This was a most emphatic win for the Gs and in a really up and down season in the league. This Division One League Cup encounter, proved a welcome relief.
The past couple of seasons have been tough for the supporters to watch from the side-lines. So, to witness this display was an enormous relief albeit against a team who were not the strongest in the league and possibly not at their best.
To our intense frustration Andrew and I missed the previous league encounter with Bagshot in which we won 5 – 0. On that occasion Pat Cox got a hat trick, Anthony “Freddie” Myers and Jeff Yohou each added to the tally.
After a disappointing result against Cove, this was a great response and credit for that must go to Les and his management team, as well as to the lads in the squad themselves. After numerous games where we have had substantial possession without being able to capitalise upon it, this was a different story. It was good to see that we are able to score goals even without an acknowledged striker at number nine.
Kenny is a mercurial player, returning to form I hope after a few weeks off, who was well worth his hat trick on the day, but for me there were two other players who stood out. Anthony “Freddie” Myers brought a great energy and attack from the midfield both in defence and going forward without hesitation and well deserved his brace of goals and could have had more. Curtis Osano was again enormous in the centre of the defence reading the game and even getting forward to support the guys up front.
From the start the Gs were on the attack and their pressure resulted in a succession of corners. Before long Freddie Myers won the ball in the middle of the park and rounded a defender before slotting the ball neatly, low into the net.
Moments later he again won the ball in the middle and played the ball beautifully forward for Jack Cleevely who found himself one on one with the Bagshot keeper who produced a great stop. He had a good game, despite the score line and received some polite applause in acknowledgement from the Gs fans at the end.
Curtis was clearly enjoying the game, getting forward at times and played a great ball in behind the visitor’s defence for Kenny to make it 2 - 0 to the Gs.
The Gs pressure was continuing. Jack Howard got in on the act, but his shot was again well saved by the Bagshot keeper. Shortly after that Jordan Bird hit the cross bar from a free kick. But then Freddie Myers got in on goal again for his second to make it 3-0 to the home team at half time. Wonderful feeling to see the Gs so comfortable for once.
For the second half Jordan Knight made way for Matt Kerbey between the posts and he seemed to play with confidence and was extremely comfortable. To be fair there was not a lot of pressure from the visitors as the Gs continued to press their opposition.
Kenny took off again getting on to the end of a through ball on the right and danced past several defenders before finishing confidently for the Gs fourth goal.
Levi Crew came on for Jack Howard.
Darren was enjoying having the freedom to roam wherever and played some good balls through to tempt his forwards. He then went through a few defenders himself before he slotted the ball home for the Gs fifth of the evening.
Jordan Bird hit the crossbar for the second time as the Gs queued up for their chances to get on the score sheet. Bagshot ran out of players on the bench so Les sportingly took off Chris Burke so that it was ten against ten for the remainder of the match.
Freddie Myers was replaced by Jeff Yohou. Straight away he started an onslaught on the visitors battered defence. His pace and determination brought him a string of opportunities, but he was unbelievably denied by the woodwork, the visiting keeper or sheer bad luck or various combinations of all three. On this occasion it did not matter.
Kenny ended the second half as he started it by getting another good goal just to show Jeff how it is done.
It would be great to think that there might be a few more games where the Gs dominate and score so freely in the league in the not too distant future. Great to see the smiles on the faces of the squad as they left the pitch. We know they have the ability, but it does not always click it seems.
