I can't remember where I read about Alfold getting a £10,000 grant from Waverley for ground improvements for the good of the community (It was on their Club Site)
BUT WHAT ABOUT THIS ONE ON MY DOORSTEP
In line with our commitment to community sport Waverley have installed a new astro at the Haslemere Hockey Club based at the Edge. £100,000 was spent by Waverley and the Haslemere Hockey Club to ensure the club continues to be a center of excellence for all age groups to play hockey.
Someone seems to be missing out!

Actually that's a bit cheeky for the hockey club to claim dibs on the pitch.. Firstly, it's not a 3G pitch suitable for league football, but merely an update on the old rutted and dangerous 'astro' and secondly it's used constantly by the school and by local youth football teams for training and practice. The smooth surface just happens to work best for the hockey club who already have the use of the other full-size astro right beside it.. I would count it as the community missing out by the council paying for all the prep work and then NOT spending the extra to have a 3G pitch which could have breathed life into local football.

Unfortunately Hendo the local news site I spotted it on has now deleted the article.
I havent been to Woolmer Hill Sports Ground since I stopped playing cricket, something like 20 years ago. Probably been thrice to watch Shottermill play football in all that time. Even back in those cricketing days they had an artificial hockey pitch of some description and it was enclosed.
Reading your response makes sense (as most of your postings do) but I'm a little confused. Should two of the places where you quoted football be hockey, ignoring the third one for youth football training?
I think I may be prompted to go up and have a look around.
It's a great pity some of those Waverley spoils don't head in the direction of Wey Court.

Dave, obviously things have changed a lot up on the hill since you last visited. For starters, everything is in colour.

Yes it was B & W. Our cricket kit was white and Shottermill FC played in White Shirts and Black Shorts and Socks.
Before you came to live in your current location John we had a lovely little recreation ground where what is now Tesco.
Prior to that it was "stolen by do gooders (Town Councillors out to make a name)" to build the original swimming pool which could easily have been built where The Edge is.
It's so sad we used to get a lot of paying spectators for both sports and that move which had a delay of 2 years with no ground broke the heart of the clubs. In fact the cricket club died for a good many years.
Tottenham Hotspur once played an evening game on the old ground with a crowd of between 1,000-1,500.

I played at the old ground many years back, along side the rsilway lines. one of my first games in goal, can't remember the score, maybe a good thing but a Shottermill player broke his leg a winger i think, made me feel sick the bone was poking through his sock. I think that you had a defender quite short no neck and about 14 stone, built like a brick shithouse!! played several times at wolmer Hill
