Godalming Town 1 – 1 British Airways
This was a very good performance from the Gs, but they were unable to capitalise on their superior possession and general dominance in the first half.
There were some more new faces to me in the Gs squad Bradley Kay in the number 9 position and and Bryan Bontamba in the midfield.
From the off the Gs seemed to be livelier and created plenty of half chances, but they could not convert their chances. On about 30 minutes the Gs developed a move on their left and Darren Wheeler produced a great floated ball to the far post where Kenny Kassabante was poised on the 6 yard box, but to his frustration he put his header just over the bar.
Almost immediately after that the Gs Keeper Jordan Knight was called upon to make a stop, against the run of the play.
Ashley Wright was partnering Curtis Osano as the centre backs alongside Jordan Bird and Taylor Davies as the full backs.
Jack Howard was in front of the back four but was not feeling well. Jeff Yohou and Kenny were switching around with Darren. All of them had other opportunities but could not hit the spot.
It was 0 - 0 at half time and the home side must have save ne in wondering how they were not in front.
The Gs started the second half well again with Chris Bourke coming on for the struggling Jack Howard. But after putting the visitors under pressure it was Jordan Knight who was called upon again to make a decent save from a quick break.
For me the two Gs centre backs were having a great game. Curtis has shown how good he is and was absolutely commanding, reading the game well and breaking up so many attacks. But I don’t remember seeing Ashley playing centre back before, but he looked super in the role.
Curtis was unlucky to get yellow carded in my book.
The home side were still getting plenty of crosses in to the box but could not finish them off.
Then came the controversial “penalty” award which had clearly hit Jordan Bird on the chest as he showed to the ref. All credit to the ref for having the guts to talk to his assistant and after their chat overruled his initial award. That took a lot of courage.
Having perhaps thought that the Gs were going to get the rub of the green, they conceded to a very good goal from a corner on the BA right wing. The ball was played in to just inside the penalty area where a powerful header crept in just under Jordan Knight’s crossbar. After all that good work it seemed that the Gs would get nothing from the game.
On the 90th minute the Gs were awarded a free kick, which Jordan Bird took and lofted the ball to the far post where after a scramble Ashley Wright got the final touch to level the score and to underline what a good game he had had. Man of the match alongside Curtis for me.
It almost looked like the Gs might take all three points when Jeff went on one of his great runs, but in the end he blasted over the bar.
