AFC Wimbledon Ladies 4 - 0 Godalming Town Ladies
The G’s Ladies were knocked out of the FA cup last year by the same opposition at Sutton. At least this time Steph Le managed to finish the whole game in one piece.
Clearly being drawn against opposition two leagues above meant a tremendous challenge to the G’s Ladies and they would clearly have to defend for their lives and they did just that.
Had they been able to convert the chance that fell to Jade Johnson early on, when Toni West managed to play her in with a great through ball, who knows what would have happened. Jade took it well and rounded the keeper who was left stranded on the deck on the edge of the area, but mishit her shot.
The score remained at 0-0 until late in the first half. Having gone two down late in the first half you might have expected that the flood gates would open, but the G’s did really well in the second half competing for everything, although they were under the cosh for some long periods of play.
It seemed that the deadlock would not be broken until Steve and Darren took a brave decision at 2-0 down to try to get something out of the game and sent Alex White upfront. “Just score a hat trick” said Steve. It was a gamble and all credit to them for giving it a go.
Unfortunately, it did not come off and Wimbledon scored twice exploiting the situation. As soon as Alex went back to right back she shut the door and that was it.
Well done to Darren Steve and all the squad. They did us and themselves proud. The G’s looked a stronger side than when the two met last year.
