Godalming 0 – 6 Molesey SCC
This was an encounter that brought to Wey Court opponents from two leagues above the G’s current position and the visitors included in their line up fans favourite Chris Wales, affectionately known as “Horse,” who was at the heart of the G’s defence for years.
The G’s were without both Kenny Kassabante and Jeff Yohou so included young Wilson Bernal in the line up at only 16 years of age. He certainly impressed with his confidence and pace wide out on the left flank.
Indeed, the first half saw the G’s take the game to their visitors and this approach carved out several good chances, but they just could not make their pressure count. After only ten minutes Wilson got on the end of a great through ball from Jordan Bird, but it ended with two attempts on goal, which were both blocked.
Only two, minutes later after some nifty passing through the middle Jack Cleevley found himself with a chance inside the area, but his shot cleared the bar.
But having had the best of the first 24 minutes the G’s conceded when the Molesey attacked down their right and scored, beating Jordan at his near post.
Only three minutes later the second came when there seemed to be some hesitation in the G’s defence.
The G’s were still making a game of it however and from a free kick from captain Jordan Bird, Curtis Osano headed on and across the face of the goal resulting in Anthony Myers getting in a shot that came back off the crossbar. The ball then fell to Coxey amongst others in the 6-yard box, but they could not get the ball in the net, when it seemed certain the G’s would score.
Somehow the score was 2-0 in favour of Molesey at the break, but they were not happy with their performance as they went into their changing room. They knew they had had some luck and needed to improve.
Within minutes of the game restarting they added a third by breaking quickly through the middle.
The G’s did get the ball in the net when Curtis Osano neatly showed his forwards how to put the ball away, only to have his effort ruled out for a hand ball in bring the ball under control.
That seemed to take the steam out of the home side as I am sure they felt it was going to be one of those days and there was no way back. The G’s were still pushing forward and of course that left them open to counter attacks. They conceded a couple more rather soft goals in the end, which compounded the misery.
On the bright side Les introduced some more promising looking youngsters to give them a taste of football at this level.
With their current recent improvement in form in the League the G’s can look forward to their next game against second placed Bedfont and Feltham on Saturday. They will need to be at their best again.
Where are they now?
We also got to share some reminiscences with Chris Wales in the bar afterwards and got the low down on a couple of other ex G’s stalwarts. It seems that Purdie is now a Dad. Congratulations to him and his long-suffering better half. Chris Musgrove is now playing rugby it seems. “Mr Reliable” Nick Hutchings at Hartley Wintney. They were all great characters.
