Godalming 2 – 0 Dorking Wanderers
This was sweet revenge for the defeat in the league encounter only a few weeks ago when the G’s went down 2 – 5, somewhat unfortunately in my book, to a team that featured several of the Dorking first team.
This was an emphatic win, which could well have ended with a higher score for the home side. Apart from one or two occasions when Jordan Knight was called upon there was little threat to the G’s throughout the game. The one fear was that despite the G’s dominance they would not be able to put the ball in the net.
Les had selected Levi Crew, Dom Hardisty, Marvin Asiamah, Jack Cleaveley and Jeff Yohou in the starting line-up leaving Kenny Kassabante, Chris Bourke, Jack Howard on the bench.
In fact, Kenny was not on the bench for that long as he had to replace Marvin after about 20 minutes when he was carried off. But in that time, he showed how fast he is and looked quite a threat. Look forward to seeing him on the pitch again soon.
Jordan Bird hit the crossbar from a free kick shortly after Kenny came on.
Jeff did some great work wide on the left finally delivering the ball into the box where Coxey got his head to it, but the visiting keeper did well to block it, the ball rebounding towards Jack Cleaveley, who unfortunately managed to miss the target from close range.
So, it was 0 – 0 at half time.
Kenny produced one of his wonderful runs down the right and produced a good shot that again the visiting keeper did well to save.
Kenny was switching sides and got in another good run on the left which resulted in Anthony Myers getting a good shot in, which again the Dorking keeper parried. But the ball went only as far as Chris Burke who found the net to finally settle the nerves of the G’s squad and their supporters. This is hopefully the first of many goals for the G’s for Chris.
The G’s now, for the first time in seasons, looked comfortable. A result of the influence of Curtis alongside Connor in the back line and captain Jordann at left back. Dom again showed his composure at right back while Levi had his best game for the G’s.
The G’s continued to press and had what looked like a very reasonable shout that the ball had crossed the line in another skirmish in the visitor’s goal mouth. The ref was not having it though. But soon after it was Kenny again down the left who lifted the ball across the goal to beyond the far post where Jack Howard hit a ferocious shot on the volley that had the linesman near us comment. “Well that one certainly crossed the line”. Great to see Jack get on the score sheet.
A goodnight for the Gs all round.
The one mystery was the new kit that the lads wore. Yellow with what looked like a chocolate flash. A mystery to all it appears.
