Godalming 2 – 5 Dorking Wanderers
From the score line you would think this was a bit of a drubbing, but, from what I saw it was a closely contested game that for much of the second half looked like it could have been drawn.
It could not have started more disappointingly for the G’s as within the opening minutes the impressive new signing Curtis Osano was forced to leave the pitch injured. But it saw Dom Hardisty return to the defence and remind us all what an accomplished young player he is.
To make things worse within the first 20 minutes we found ourselves 2 – 0 down and the mercurial Kenny Kasabante also needed to leave the pitch with an injury. But that brought Jeff Yohou on and he really gave the opposition defence something to think about with his electrifying pace. The G’s line up was the same as for Saturday’s game, but for the addition of Dave Oppong on the left, for Jordan Bird, who was unavailable.
A Dorking fan explained that there were several players from their first team squad on Saturday on the pitch and that did not come as a particular surprise, seeing how quickly they were able to break from defence in numbers. It was also good to see Rory Sellick back at Wey Court and his family of course, which brought back memories of seasons past when he was a very promising G’s squad member.
Despite going two goals down early on Pat Cox looked dangerous and brought a couple of good stops from the Dorking keeper.
Joe Sowden has been astounding with his work rate in the middle and showed pace to get onto a ball through the middle and hit a good low shot that bounced up off the keeper, but then the ball dropped into the net to get one back for the G’s.
Coxey was proving to be a handful as well and a strange skirmish on the ground with the keeper resulted in a talking-to from the ref for the goalie.
Dorking’s third came from them breaking quickly again from defence and overpowering the G’s back line.
Jeff was tormenting the visitors defence and from a bit of a mix up in their play he used his pace to latch on to the ball and play it into the middle where Kamal helped it on its way into the net. 3 -2 down at half time.
The second half saw even more of the possession with the G’s, but, try as they might, they could not level the score. Dave also had to retire with a reoccurrence of his ham string pull. Ashley dropping back and Levi Crew coming on.
I hate to be critical of referees, but we saw some strange decisions. That is not uncommon at this level, but there were some stranger than usual, where the G’s were awarded a free kick and a Dorking player appeared to kick the ball away (presumably to waste time) and the ref insisted we play on. He then booked a G’s player for pointing out that the defensive wall at a free kick was not far enough back, which he then proved was correct by moving the wall back.
There was no more score until the last couple of minutes of normal time, which sealed the Gs fate.
But after 13 minutes of extra time the fifth came just to rub salt in the wound after the home side had been attacking for long periods.
Let’s hope Kenny, Curtis and Dave are all fit again soon, as it is Ash United at Wey Court on Saturday.
