Tooting Bec 1 – 2 Godalming Town
This was Godalming’s first win of the season in the CCL Div 1. Hopefully the first of many wins to come. Also, a first visit to the Raynes Park ground where Tooting Bec ground share and although the facilities may not be the most impressive, the warmth of welcome from the G’s hosts was outstanding. Much appreciated.
G’s were without the impressive Nick Sowden in the midfield after a great performance last week, where I believe he picked up a knock. But there were three new faces in the squad. Curtis Osano at centre back, Ashley Wright and Kamal McEwan in the midfield.
Jordan Knight was in goal, Ethan Kaiser, Curtis Osano and Connor Gale as the back three. Kenny Kasabante and Jordan Bird as the wide players/wing backs, Jack Howard, Joe Sowden, Ashley Wright and Kamal McEwan in the midfield with Pat Cox at number 9. On the bench Kai Bartlett, Levi Crew, Jeff Yuhou, Dave Oppong and Jack Cleevely. Good to see Dom Hardisty on the bench as well although not named, training with the squad.
The G’s started brilliantly and we saw some tremendous slick passing through the middle of the pitch in the first 20minutes or so, without being able to finish it off.
Ashley Wright hit a curling shot heading for the corner that the home keeper managed to save.
On one occasion Pat Cox, who was seeing far more of the ball than he did last week, was put through by a superb pass from Ethan Kaiser, but he was only able to slide the ball just wide when one on one with the home keeper. Minutes later Jordan Bird unleased a tremendous drive that somehow the home keeper managed to get his fingers to and push it onto the bar and over.
Another Coxey attempt hits the net stanchion.
As we have seen before however, if you do not take your chances, it tends to come back and bite you in the bum. So, it was. A good break by the home side down their right resulted in a low cross to the near post, where it was put in from close range. 1 -0 down seriously against the run of play.
Fortunately for the G’s some ten minutes later Jordan Bird delivered a long ball into the box where Pat Cox did his stuff heading home from close range to bring the score level.
There then followed a strange period of play when for some strange reason the ref decided to award a penalty to Tooting for a pretty innocuous challenge. Tooting’s attempt from the spot hit the crossbar and rebounded back in play, only to be finally hit home at the second or third attempt. However, it was then ruled offside, which was also inexplicable.
It fell to Joe Sowden to get on the end of a clearance from Jordan Knight and hit the net just before half time to settle the Gs supporters’ nerves. 2- 1 to the Gs at half time.
Gs kept the pressure on during the second half and from a corner Joe Sowden blasted just over from close range.
Jeff came on as did Kai and later Levi Crew. Jeff got through one on one with the keeper, but again could not beat the home keeper, who blocked the shot with his legs.
More chances came to both sides, but neither could score.
Then with 12 minutes or so left of play Ethan was felled and received treatment on the pitch before being helped off holding his chest. This left the Gs with only ten players on the pitch and a fair bit of nail biting for the Gs supporters.
Yet another strange decision from the ref saw him award another free kick to Tooting on the edge of the G’s box. They managed to hit the woodwork, but could not score, to the relief of the G’s.
In the end we held on and took all three points. We made it hard for ourselves. We probably should have had the game wrapped up in the first half. But, a win is a win and let’s see lots more wins. Joe Sowden man of the match for me.
Let’s hope that Ethan has not sustained anything too bad and is playing again soon.
