Horndean 5 - 0 Godalming (F.A.Cup)
It is part of the challenge and attraction of the FA Cup that it takes you to new clubs in different divisions, who may be at a higher level, there is always the hope that even if you are drawn against a higher ranked team, who knows what will happen on the day.
Horndean were always going to be a tough nut to crack as they are in the Wessex Premier League and finished fourth in the league last season. According to their programme they have over 30 players in their squad.
We had Jordan Knight in goal, Ethan Kaiser, Kai Bartlett and Jordan Bird at the back. Nick Sowden, Joe Sowden, Jack Howard and Chris Bourke
Kenny Kasabante and Darren Wheeler the wide players and Pat Cox at number 9.
On the bench Jack Cleevely, David Oppong, Jeff Yohou, Levi Crew, Dominic Hardisty
You hope for a good start. That did not happen. The Gs conceding within the first minutes I would think. Straight from a long goal kick that saw one of their forwards one on one with Jordan and opened the scoring. The first half was pretty torrid for the Gs. But for some great defending with Jordan Bird clearing off the line and Jordan Knight bringing off some good saves it could have been much more than 2 -0 down at half time.
Chris Bourke did get to hit a good-looking shot that saw the home keeper dive at full stretch to clear. But other than that, despite some brave running from Kenny as usual and the Gs trying to play the ball out of defence there were few genuine attempts on the hosts goal. Some promising looking build-up play generally petered out in the final third of the pitch and Pat Cox saw little of the ball.
The Gs never gave up however and to their credit after the break and now playing down the very considerable slope on the pitch they started to put some pressure on the home side. Horndean showed their class when breaking from defence getting players forward quickly.
Darren made way for Jeff, Dom came on for Jordan Bird who was suffering with a hamstring pull and later Jack came on for Chris.
Jeff made some good attacks down the wings giving the home defence some trouble with his pace but, despite also getting a few crosses in, the Gs could not convert.
Horndean’s third came from what seemed to be a clear offside position, but this would not have affected the result. It did however I am sure knock the Gs squad just when they appeared to be getting back into the game.
Their number seven Liam Kimber was dangerous and chalked up a hat trick with two almost identical goals, where he cut in from the left and scored just inside the near post, after the Gs had been applying pressure of their own. It would have been good to get a goal or two back. It was no more than the Gs deserved but, try as they did it was not to be.
So, although we had hoped for something better than this, there is still a lot to look forward to with Les and his team featuring some exciting youngsters alongside a hard working midfield.
Time to concentrate on the league next weekend with a trip to Tooting Bec who I am told do not play at Tooting, so need to find out where they do play.

Bovril status. Thoughts of Bovril have been far from our minds during the sizzling summer heat. But a trip the wrong side of the Downs with leaden skies and a keen breeze put some beefy refreshment straight back on the agenda. Horndean catering did not disappoint. Splendidly stirred Bovril with an old-fashioned pepper cruet for self-seasoning. The highlight of the afternoon!
