Godalming 0 – 0 FC Deportivo Galicea
A first point in this league for the Gs, on a day when it was far too hot for football. Following the pre-season friendlies, this was also a chance to see how the young Gs squad would be able to fair in this league with one or two more experienced players in their midst.
The Gs featured Jordan Knight in goal Ethan Keiser, Connor Gale and Jordan Bird in the back line, Darren Wheeler, Joe Sowden, Jack Howard in the midfield with Dave Oppong and Kenny Kasibante the wide players, Pat Cox and Jeff Youhou up front.
On the bench were Nick Sowden, Chris Bourke, Levi Crewe, Kai Bartlett and Jack Cleevely.
The Gs were quick off the mark and Kenny looked dangerous when he was cutting in from the right wing. We almost saw a repeat of the goal against Guildford when Kenny pulled the ball back into the box from wide on the wing, but this time it was just behind the impressive Pat Cox.
The Gs number 9 was impressive winning numerous flick-ons in the air and holding up the ball when necessary. Unfortunately, the young Gs alongside him were unable to feed off these but will no doubt get better at doing so.
The visitors also had an absolute flier in their number 7 and he managed to get behind the Gs defensive lines on a few occasions. But, neither side had more than one good chance in the first half, which ended 0 – 0.
Again, in the second half the home side stepped up and created more opportunities with crosses from the wings but could not capitalise. In one spell of Gs pressure Darren Wheeler delivered a neat chip with his trusty left foot to the far post, where the visiting keeper stretched to grasp the ball only inches from the head of Pat Cox as he set himself to head home the ball.
Shortly after Darren hit a shot that saw the FCDG keeper dive at full stretch to save.
The visitors were composed on the ball in their midfield and looked to use diagonal passes to break forward quickly, in behind the home defence. On one occasion their number 7 got through one on one with Jordan Knight who did a great job in saving bravely from point blank range.
A good competitive game and there was a lot of effort from the Gs midfield, who were buzzing everywhere. Nick Sowden replaced his brother and Chris Bourke came on for Dave Oppong (who came off on Tuesday with a hamstring niggle). Later in the half Kai Bartlett came on at the back, replacing Jeff Youhou, to let Jordan Bird move forward on the left.
FA cup starts next weekend at Horndean.
