Godalming 1 – 1 Guildford City (6 -5 to Godalming after penalties) Axtell Cup
Godalming registered their first win of the pre-season in the Axtell Cup after an exciting encounter in this derby game with Guildford City, who this coming season will be playing in the CCL Premier division, a level above their hosts. The Gs finally got the result after a penalty shoot out that went to sudden death and finished 6-5. A couple of tremendous saves by Liam Beach, the visiting Guildford keeper, kept them in it after some wayward shooting by his team mates that could have interfered with the flights from Gatwick.
The new look Godalming side with still more new faces showed lots of pace up front and had the best of the first half without being able to capitalise. In one spell the Gs saw Darren Wheeler go close with two headers as the home side won a succession of corners.
There were a few ex Gs in the Guildford squad. Mark Watkins from a few seasons back, Bobby Webbe, Evander Lopez and Romario Hart along with the very popular Izy Nzelo.
It was a pretty even affair in the first half with the home side having more of the possession and having an effort cleared off the line when it seemed they would score. But it was 0 -0 at half time.
The first goal for the Gs came from a super back heel from Jeff Yohou on the Gs right which set up Kenny Kasibante beautifully to attack the opposing defence. His pace saw him get past and make it towards the goal line where he played a glorious cross square into the box. Pat Cox took a touch before blasting the ball into the net. 1 -0 to the Gs after ten minutes of the second half.
City now had to throw everything at the Gs if they were to get anything from the match. David Oppong had to be replaced as he had a hamstring pull and Nick Sowden came on to add his energy and fight to the midfield. Jordan Knight had to be on his toes for the Gs and produced a couple of really good saves.
Jeff Yohou had great shot tipped over by the City keeper.
However, from a corner on the visitors left Michael Campbell managed to bundle the ball in at the far post to bring the score level with about twenty minutes left. It was frantic for both sides until the final whistle, but it ended full time 1-1.
The drama of a penalty shoot-out saw the Gs take the trophy 6- 5 and enjoy their first win of the pre-season.
Les Cleevely and his management team have brought together a good squad of talented young players and have now introduced a few more experienced ones. It will be exciting to see how they gel over the coming CCL D1 season.
