Alfold 3 – 1 Godalming Town
With the local derby with Guildford looming large this was the last of the pre-season friendlies, although I suspect that Les will be adding players and jiggling with the set up for a month or two yet.
I believe that Alfold last season gained promotion from the Sussex League equivalent to our CCL Div 1, so will be playing in their equivalent of CCL Premier League, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, the first half was pretty even with Kenny Kasibante looking very lively and through his persistent harrying of the visitor’s defenders, won the ball and got to the edge of the 6-yard box where the visiting keeper did well to save a well hit shot at his near post early on.
Other than that, although the Gs had plenty of possession, they could not produce too much to threaten the visitors goal.
There were more new faces in the Gs squad and also good to see Dave Oppong Adjei back with his energy and pace at the back. This time on the right with Jordan Bird on the left and Jordan Knight in goal. A new face alongside Kai Bartlett as centre backs. Joe Sowden started alongside Jack Howard and Jack Cleevely Darren wide on the left and Kenny on the right. Not sure who it was at No 9.
So it was 0-0 at half time, but not for long as the Gs opened the scoring within minutes of the restart when our number 9 calmly slotted the ball past the visiting keeper. Gs 1-0 up. But not for long. It seemed to spur the visitors into attack and they scored a cracker from an attack down their right and a great cross, which was side footed in from close range giving Jordan Knight no chance.
Their second came from a free kick that the home side failed to clear for some reason and again was put in from close range.
Lots of changes in the Gs squad which saw Nick on for his brother Chris to replace Jack Howard and Dom Hardisty at right back when Dave moved to left wing for Jack Cleevely.
Their third came when Jordan seemed to make a comfortable save, but the ball was spilled forward to give the visitors a tap in. Who would be goalkeeper!
Well, the game on Tuesday night against Guildford in the 2018 Axtell Cup should give us some idea of where we are with this exciting new team, before the start of the League season. The last encounter finished 4-4 if I remember correctly and was an absolute nail biting cracker.
