Godalming Town 2 – 4 Spelthorne Sports
This was another disappointing result in the fight for more points, but an encouraging performance none the less from the home side, in a game in which the advantage seemed to swing from one side to the other.
The Gees had Aiden Upward in goal, Josh Jackman, Steve Bettancourt, Alex Rodriguez and Josh Pound as the back four. Chad Gouter, Lee Boon and Bobby Webbe in the midfield. Bobby Bennett and Romario Harte wide with a returning John Bennett upfront. This left Lewis Lodge, Isy Nzello, Tom Biss, Jon Palmer and newcomer Ben Toye on the bench.
The game did not start well with the home side playing towards the training pitch end and after only ten minutes the Gees gave away a free kick beyond their penalty area on the visitors left. The ball was hit hard towards goal, just above head height and went beyond the far post, the referee initially indicating a goal kick, but then changed his signal to a corner for the visitors on their right. This was played into the edge of the 6yard box where a glancing header saw the ball creep inside the far post.
It was only six minutes later when the Gees were awarded a free kick out on their right, which Bobby Webbe took and delivered a good ball into the box for John Bennett to get his head to and power the ball past the visiting keeper.
Some obscure decisions were given by the referee. When he finally got one right it brought the noisiest reactions from the stand all afternoon.
Both sides had chances, but the score was 1-1 at half time.
Having fought their way back from the early setback the Gees went one better at the start of the second half where the ever dangerous Bobby Bennett collected the ball on the right and cut in cleverly towards the goal finally slipping the ball through to Lee Boon who played it square in to John Bennett in front of goal where he smartly hit the ball home. 2 – 1 to the Gees.
The delight for the home fans was unfortunately only short lived as the visitors hit back almost immediately when the Gees defence seemed unable to clear the danger in a bit of a goal mouth scramble.
Further, the visitors went ahead again when they broke quickly and attacked down their left and came up with a vicious shot from an acute angle that somehow beat Aiden to nestle in the net at the far post.
Lewis Lodge replaced Josh Pound after he received further treatment on the pitch having suffered an injury in the first half.
Soon the Gees went all out in attack bringing on Tom Biss, and Ben Toye for Romario and Chad Gouter. This produced more chances for the Gees, but they could not capitalise on them despite their efforts. This also left them open to a quick break from a long bal[ and that is exactly what happened with Aiden coming off his line, but unable to stop the visiting forward rounding him and popping the ball in the net.
More points are urgently needed and the Gees must look towards every game as a chance to add to their tally and to make their future safe with so few games left. We have a good enough squad, we can do it. COYGs
