Godalming Town 1 – 2 Abbey Rangers



After a much-improved performances, over the last month or so, the Gees will have expected to get at least something in the way of points from this encounter. After a rather scrappy game there was not too much to be pleased about for the home side who enjoyed far less possession and seemed off the pace for much of the game.



The Gees were without a number of regulars including Bobby Bennett, Steve Betancourt, Isy Nzello and Lee Boon. But saw the return of the influential Tom Biss after a substantial break back in New Zealand. Josh Kempton also returned to the squad. There was also a new face at right back in Josh Jackman alongside Chad Goulter, Josh Kempton and Lewis Lodge. Jack Howard © in front of the back four with Bobby Webbe and Piers Oldland in the centre and Ben Cotton wide on the right with Tom Biss on the left and Hakim Griffiths at number 9.



On the bench were Josh Pound, Tre Trowers, Luke Haskell and Romario Hart along with another new face in Craig Mountain. So, a pretty strong squad on paper, but again a line up with numerous changes.



The Gees, playing towards the training pitch, showed a few flashes of class with some quick passes. On 18 minutes into the game from a move on their right Hakim was put through against the advancing keeper who managed to block Hakims shot with his body.



Ten minutes later the visitors went ahead (I am told) when a ball blocked by the Gees defence sat up conveniently in front of the visitor’s number 9 and gave him the opportunity to volley the ball in to put Abbey ahead.



At the start of the second half the Gees came under more pressure and were kept in the game when Aiden Upward made a tremendous double save from close range and minutes later another save with his feet.



The Abbey number 9 scored their second from out on the right of the Gees goal.



Ben Cotton and Hakim Griffiths were replaced by Luke Haskell and Romario Hart.



The Gees showed a few flashes of inspiration in attack and on one of these Luke Haskell laid the ball neatly back to Josh Jackman with a deft backheel to allow Josh to open his GTFC account with a well struck shot low past the visiting keeper. This seemed to give renewed hope that there was a chance of points for the home side.



Piers Oldland hit a good shot that took a slight deflection wide of the target.



Towards the end of the game Romario Hart was put through one on one with the visiting keeper, but seemed to momentarily hesitate, perhaps concerned that he could be offside, but the lino kept his flag down. Again, Jason Mc Gregor in the Abbey goal made a good block with his body.



The Gees had another half chance in the dying seconds of the game when Luke Haskell managed to turn inside the 6 yard box, but he could not get any real power on his shot.



The Gees were below par all round in this game, apart from Aiden and must look to gain more points from their remaining matches and return to something like the form they have shown in recent games if they are to make themselves safe. We have seen how good they can be and I am sure Gav and Jon will get them back to their winning ways.

And with Aiden Upward being on dual reg. with Farnborough he could well be required back home after Craig Bradshaw received a straight red on Saturday.
