AFC Wimbledon V Godalming Ladies

Looks as though this is a 2 o'clock kick off according to the FA website and AFC Wimbledon. I mention this only because there was talk last week of it being 1 o'clock.

Sounds as though there are a few of us going. I should have space for at least 2 if anybody need a lift.

AFC WIMBLEDON Ladies 5 – GTFC Ladies 0

The FA Cup dream for the GTFC Ladies came to end today at the Sutton United, Gander Green Lane Ground. The home side were strong in possession, well drilled, skilful and demonstrated why they are currently at the very top of the FA Women’s Premier League, South East Division One.


The GTFC Ladies are bound to be disappointed at the result, but they can all be proud of their achievement in getting to the FA Cup proper. They have produced some great performances in the past months to get to this stage and it was always a tough draw.


Kim Ketchell was in goal as usual, Hannah Davies, Mairead Cheeseman, Lauren Carnell and Laura Funnell as the back four, Jess Winchester, Becky Bloor and Steph Le the midfield and Toni West at number 9 with Becky Munroe and Megan Vincer wide.


The game did not start that well for the visitors as they conceded quite early from a corner where a Wimbledon player was allowed to head the ball home from close range without too much pressure from the Gees defence.


Becky Bloor blocked a fierce shot, which took the wind out of her sails and left her laid out recovering for a while. Things then got even worse when the Gees were two down and Steph Le went in for a typically strong tackle that left her to be carried off the pitch. Megan Oliver coming on to replace her.
Becky Bloor was also replaced at half time with Carys Potter coming on for her.


The home side used the width of the pitch well and passed the ball with accuracy and confidence on the 3G pitch that probably took the Gees a while to get used to. But the Gees Ladies battled away bravely throughout. Their opposition did not allow them any time whatsoever on the ball and always seemed to have an extra player in defence.


They always say that you do not get better by beating teams by a mile. The only way to improve is to play tough teams, and I am sure that they will all have learned from playing against a team from a higher level and enjoyed playing at a proper stadium.


Well done GTFC Ladies. You have given us great enjoyment and pride on the journey. You have played some great football and shown passion and commitment, as well as team work, on the way. You did yourselves and your supporters proud.
