Godalming Town Ladies 2 – 0 New London Lionesses
The Gees were taking on the undefeated league leaders today at Wey Court and the served up another tremendous feast of power, pace and sheer determination and will to win in every position on the pitch.
For the first few minutes it seemed that the home side attacking the road end were a little nervy, but were defending well against a well drilled side who were clearly also quite physical in the challenge.
On about 15 minutes Megan Vincer brilliantly turned her defender wide on the Gees left only to be taken out from behind. In the men’s game I am sure that would have brought at least a yellow card, but the ref on this occasion was happy that a talking to was sufficient.
Only five minutes later the visitors number 2 was again penalised for a shove in the back on Toni West just outside the area but again receive no more than a talking to. From the resulting free kick, which was taken by Becky Bloor, the ball bounced clear from the defensive wall to Charlotte Benson, who hit a super volley high and to the right of the visiting keeper to put the home side 1-0 up.
The visitors put the home side under quite a bit of pressure, but the Gees defence was well organised and there were no clear shots to worry Kim Ketchell.
Early in the second half the Gees had a free kick taken by Jess Winchester that beat the defensive wall and struck the upright, but just bounced out again.
Megan Oliver came on during the second half and was making herself known. She battled for a ball in her own half of the pitch and as the ball flew out she chased it towards the visitor’s goal with defenders in hot pursuit. Initially it seemed she would be caught, but she had the legs of her chasers and drove on into the penalty area where the Lionesses keeper came out, as she should to narrow the angle, but Megan slotted the ball, in text book style, low past her to give the Gees a 2-0 lead and some breathing space.
The visitor had to throw everything at the home side if they were to get anything out of the game. They won several corners and hit the Gees crossbar from a corner. But the Gees held firm and gained another three points.
Tremendous performances again from the whole squad with so many Gees players outstanding. It was a joy to watch.
Steph Le again ran herself into the ground, like a terrier chasing everything in midfield, while Becky Munroe did the same upfront with Toni West. The whole back four were outstanding. But for me today Becky Bloor was the Lady of the Match. She won so many crucial battles and played some great passes. But overall a great team performance yet again.
