Grateful Godalming picked up all three points courtesy of Leatherhead goalkeeper Chris Gibson on a chilly afternoon at Wey Court. Godalming made several changes to the team that lost at Horsham Y.M.C.A. last weekend, including new signing Simon Hamilton at right back and replacing Joe Chandiram with Wes Harrison.
Leatherhead started brightest coming close on a handful of occasions before taking the lead on 17 minutes. A scramble in the penalty area resulted in a simple tap in from Julian Thompson. The ‘Tanners’ kept up the pressure right up until injury time in the first half. However, some sloppy defending allowed Shaun Lydon to equalise with a superb lob over the stranded Leatherhead keeper.
Godalming looked a more confident side after the break and began to contain Leatherhead’s attacks whilst creating numerous chances of their own. With the attack needing a change, Roger Steer sent on Michael Ruffles to bolster the midfield and moved Glen Stanley up front to partner Danny Newman.
Finally the goal came, albeit a strange one. An in-swinging corner confused Gibson who stuck out a palm which sent the ball into the goal, only for it to be hacked out by the man on the line. After much consultation with his linesman, the referee correctly awarded the goal to put Godalming 2-1 up with ten minutes to go.
Leatherhead, stunned by the reality of possibly losing the game, came back with a vengeance only to be repelled by the superb Godalming defence. This was an excellent three points which moves Town up two places in the Ryman South table.
