Dorking Wanderers (1) 5 v 1 (0) Godalming
In these strange times we went off to Dorking, in the rain, believing that this would probably be the last time we would be able to see the Gs in action before 2021. But as we made our way to the ground the sun started to appear. Was this an omen?
Well we knew that we would be without Sam Boultwood and Sam Taylor after last week’s events. But were surprised to see that captain Rory Sellick was also missing, as was Adrian Giles.
On the plus side we saw the smiling countenance of Roberto Dos Santos warming up in the Gs colours.
Relu Oprea was between the sticks, Dexter Skipp at right back, Nathan Morris at left back and Myles Davidson returned to partner Ben May as the centre backs. Luca Scanella, Connor Blanchard, Kurt Greenaway. Lekan Osideko wore the number 9 and Josh Ogunseye number 10 which left Roberto in the number 11 shirt.
On the bench were Elijah Carter, Kai Francis, Connor Young, Matt dexter and a new name to me Scott Javan.
I had a technology failure on my phone so have nothing more than my memory and Andrew’s video record of what happened.
The first half started well and the Gs were pressing their hosts, without getting in any real shots on goal. At times it seemed to me that some players were struggling to deal with the pace of the ball on the wet G4 (or is it G5) pitch.
The Gs won a corner or two and from one Ben May got a decent header in that caused some confusion but could not find the net.
Then one of those freakish incidents happened when, as Dorking attacked, a speculative shot from range caught Ben May’s knee as he made a block near the edge of his penalty area and deflected the ball into the Gs net. These things happen.
Other than this, things were pretty even, although the game was constantly interrupted by the referee’s whistle, and therefore developed little flow. However, it remained pretty even for me.
So, at half time it was 1-0 to Dorking and all to play for in the second half.
The Gs started the second half well and pressed their opponents. The Gs were awarded a free kick just inside their half on the right side. Relu came up to take it and delivered a great ball into the penalty area where the target man was Josh, who headed on towards the far post. Connor had ghosted in and was unmarked to hit the ball home and draw the score level.
At this point it seemed that the Gs were in the driving seat.
Kai came on for Roberto, who I thought had done quite well.
Minutes later Josh got through chasing a ball over the top, but the ref signalled an offside, presumably against Kai although he was retreating away from the ball.
The free kick was taken at least 15 metres further towards the Gs end than it should have been and Dorking went ahead again taking advantage of the ball played long and beating Relu as he advanced to close the gap.
Lekan once again was getting a bit of a working over from the home defence and perhaps for that reason he was taken off and Elijah introduced on the wing.
Then, on a day when the Gs were not getting much in the way of “the rub of the green” or the ref’s whistle for that matter, Dorking were awarded a penalty for an apparent handball in blocking a shot. This made it 3-1 to the home side.
Then with Gs then introduced Matt Dexter as an unlikely right back, presumably to let Dexer Skipp get forward more as he was moved into midfield.
The Gs did not give up, but the rather strange set up led to a couple of easy goals for the home team to make it look like the Gs were hammered. The score might look like it, but it did not feel like it at least for the first 70 minutes or so.

p.s. I have seen that there is another game now for Tuesday night at Walton and Hersham who currently sit second in the League.
