Godalming (1) 2 – 3 (1) Kensington
The Gs recent spell of good form came to an end after a fierce and sometimes fiery contest at The Billl Kyte Stadium. The new sexy goal nets in yellow and green saw some action as well in this 5 goal thriller.
For the Gs Adrian Giles was in goal, Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre backs with Nathan Morris and Sam Wade as the full backs. Rory Sellick was still recovering from injury so Connor Blanchard was in the midfield with Sam Boultwood and Luca Scanella. Ellis Lentil was up front with Josh Ogunseye and Olalekan Osideko.
On the bench were Andrei Muresan, Connor Young, Elijah Carter, Miles Davidson – Townsend and Matt Dexter. Good to see both Sam Wade and Miles back fit and playing again.
It sounds just like all the other reports I have done for this season as surprise, surprise the Gs went ahead after some good pressure in the opening spell. But we know what always follows that don’t we? Yes, again having got their noses in front the score was levelled after a poor attempt to defend a corner when all seemed to be going well.
The game started well with the Gs making problems with their pace up front and it seemed to take the visitors a bit by surprise. Luca got a chance one on one with the visiting keeper who managed to block the shot. But then Kensington created their first chance, which brought a good stop from Adrian, when he had to get down really quickly.
Soon after that the Gs attacked again and this time it was Ellis Lentill who got a powerful shot in, which took a severe deflection and ended up creeping in just under the crossbar to open the scoring for the Gs.
About 10 minutes later Luca tried to make a clearance, which hit a Kensington forward in the back and rebounded kindly for one of his colleagues to get a shot in that went around for a corner. Unfortunately, there was what looked like a mix up in defending the ball in which seemed to be poorly hit and one of the Gs defenders was caught out trying to clear the ball, while on the deck and making little contact. The result was that the ball was hit home from close range by a Kensington forward to level the score. So, that is par for the course these days it seems. Back to 1-1, as always.
Then, shortly before the break, Ellis Lentil went into the ref’s book after a tackle and was sent to the sin bin. So, I assume there must have been some dissent. Strange that we have not seen anything in the previous games, so far this season, to remind us that the sin bin rules still apply.
The visitors go on the attack again with the Gs down to ten men. Giles has to be on his toes again to protect the Gs goal.
Even down to 10 men the Gs still had good chances first Ben May almost got his second of the season from close range, but the visiting keeper managed to foil the effort. Soon after this Josh and Lekan combined well in close contact before Josh worked his way across the goal area and hit a blistering left footed shot that had “goal” written all over it. But, somehow yet again the Kensington keeper got a strong arm to it and knocked it clear when he had no right to do so. So, they went in at half time with the score at 1-1.
Not long into the second half the visitors broke forward down their right, crossed the ball in and the first pass appeared to go too far wide on the left, but there number nine managed to pull the ball back into the box when it had gone well past the far post, despite the acute angle, to give a colleague the opportunity to score at the near post from close range.
After around 10 - 15 minutes or so of the second half and with Ellis Lentill restored to the pitch, both Sam Wade and Sam Boultwood were substituted to make way for Connor Young and Miles Davidson.
A bit of a fracas developed around the halfway line after a tackle by Luca and some retaliation from the Kensington number 3, which got him into the ref’s note book. The ref then spent a while talking to the Gs bench as well. Probably asking their advice about where to pick up a good curry on the way home.
In another Gs attack Connor Young got into the box and hit a shot, which again was scrambled away by the green clad visiting stopper.
It seemed that the Gs were starting to get a bit leggy and for me missed the influence of Sam Boultwood in the middle. Kensington seemed to be finding more space on the wings as they broke out of defence. Perhaps the Gs management felt the same as they replaced Luca with Elijah presumably to bolster the midfield.
Then as it seemed time was running out for the Gs Ben May had come forward for a free kick that was partly cleared before it was lofted back again by Nathan and appeared to be heading to go out of play when Ben chased it down on the left of the visitors goal and lobbed the ball back towards the far post where Lekan won possession, but his shot was probably going just wide before Josh was able to poke the ball home to bring the scores level again at 2 -2. It seemed that we would at least take a point out of this game.
But, as the Gs continued to attack looking for all three points, the visitors broke again and somehow broke the hearts of the Gs team and supporters who had turned out again in their numbers, by nicking another goal at the death.
The Gs tried again to level the score, but time was always going to be against them. Could we have defended when the score was back to 2-2? Who knows?
It was another game that swung one way and another, but, despite the best efforts of the Gs squad, they came home without any points for the first time in a while. At least it was not a 7-2 or a 6-1 defeat as we saw on the TV recently. But for some super saves from the visiting keeper we could have taken all three points. But we all know the only thing that counts is ball in the net.
So, we need to get the lads up again for next week’s visit of Epsom and Ewell and get back to winning ways.
