Godalming (1) 1 – 2 (0) CB Hounslow (Cherry Red Records League Cup)
The Gs much changed team went out of the Cherry Red Records League Cup to a team from mid position in the Premier League. But it was by no means a walk over for the visitors, who had their keeper to thank for a handful of good reaction saves that kept them in the hunt. Phil had said that he would give a chance to some of the players who have not had a great deal of playing time so far, so there was a different look to the Gs team.
Relu Oprea was between the posts, with Sam Wade and Nathan Morris the full backs and Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre back pairing. The midfield was made up of Luca Scanella, Elijah Carter, Matt Dexter with Andrei Muresan, Kurt Greenaway and Kai Francis up front.
On the bench were some more fine players Connor Blanchard, Ollie Ballam, Darren Wheeler, Ellis Lentil and Connor Young. Dom Hardisty was lurking in the crowd. It is always good to see him. Captain Rory was also in the crowd making sure everyone was behaving themselves, while he was recovering from injury.
Unfortunately, Andrew and I could not get to the game before about 30 minutes in, so we missed the Gs goal, but understand it was well taken by Kurt Greenaway. It was a pretty even affair and the Gs were creating some reasonable chances and went into the half time break 1-0 up.
It was good to see Elijah in the thick of it as he is so good at sliding passes through to the guys up front. On one occasion he managed to work his way through the visiting defence even with a visiting player hanging on his back. Unfortunately, his final shot cleared the bar.
Kai Francis and Kurt Greenaway were both replaced by Connor Young and Ellis Lentil to introduce a bit more energy.
The visitors drew level after an attack down their left side that looked like it had run out of steam, but, despite Relu making a save on the first shot, the ball fell well for the visitors and they put the rebound away.
The referee consulted the linesman before having a chat with the visiting number 5 after a rash foul.
Darren Wheeler then came on to replace Matt Dexter.
Connor Young chased down what looked like a lost cause out wide on the left before bearing down on the goal and hitting a powerful drive. But the visiting keeper did well to parry it away and the ball bobbled tantalisingly across the goal mouth before a visiting defender managed to clear, before the Gs forwards could get into the 6 yard box.
CB number 10 went into the ref’s book.
Hounslow then went ahead with an attack on the right that seemed to have gone in touch before being pulled back for a shot that beat Relu at his near post.
The Gs went all out for the equaliser going to a formation of three at the back and Darren delivered a great corner at the training ground end that was only bettered by Ben May’s powerful header, that somehow the visiting stopper managed to palm away on the line. The ball then bounced around tantalisingly while defenders blocked a number of attempts before the final shot from the Gs went just wide of the upright.
All in all, the visitors probably had more shots in the game, but were pretty wayward and relatively few troubled Relu, while the visiting keeper, who seemed to have made himself popular with the G army behind his goal, pulled off a couple of blinders to keep them in it.
Another impressive battling performance from the lads, who can all feel that they did themselves no harm at all.
Anyway, the League match on Saturday, is more important and so COYG’s
