Fleet Spurs (1) 1 - 2 (1) Godalming
This was not the best game of football that we have seen, but it was a battling performance, by a changed Gs team. But most importantly it brought us three more points and again pushed the Gs up the League to 7th in the table, although it may be fleetingly, as there were few games played in the league today.
It was a strange day as we had so much rain that I doubted the game would be on. However, it was and all credit to the hosts for getting it on.
Having been surprised that the game was on at all, the next surprise was to see Darren Wheeler running around the side of the Fleet Spurs Pavilion trying to get in the changing rooms. “I’m back” he said, with a grin. Then another surprise looking at the home side saw that Jack Cleevely was in their line-up.
For the Gs Adrian Giles was in goal, Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre backs with Kurt Greenaway at left back and then another surprise that Captain Rory had pulled something in the warm up and was going to sit this one out. So, Connor Blanchard was going to start at right back. Darren Wheeler would therefore join the starting line up alongside Sam Boultwood and Luca Scanella in the middle. Ellis Lentil was up front with Josh Ogunseye and Olalekan Osideko.
Those left on the bench were Kai Francis, Elijah Carter, Nathan Morris and Andrei Muresan.
The weather amazingly started to clear and the sun came out as the game started. This inspired the Gs and they seemed to be up for it as the game got under way. Within minutes Darren got on to the end of a good cross to the left and bore down on the goal hitting a great low shot, but unfortunately it went across the goal and past the far post. It would have been quite a start for the Gs had it found the net, as it really should have.
Around twenty minutes into the game Ellis Lentil energetically chased down a cross and made contact with it just inside the left touchline where he then went past two defenders as he cut in towards goal along the goal line, by magic, before slipping the ball into the area where Lekan calmly side footed into the net. Great to see Lekan get a goal for the Gs. He really deserves it having done so much work in every game.
Now the sad bit. Because Andrew was at work today, I was charged with the camera to try to get some video footage. I believed I had got the goal, which I had. But unfortunately, the goal was not in shot, so I missed both Ellis’ great run and although Lekan can be seen, the goalmouth is not visible. My apologies to the lads. I have been sacked as the stand in videoer.
Anyway, we know that the Gs this season always score first. We also know that the opposition always draw level. The same happened yet again as Fleet attacked the centre of the Gs defence, which seemed to part and the sizeable home number 10 took his opportunity well when one on one with Adrian to bring the score level again.
After the restart Connor Blanchard swapped with Sam Boultwood who was looking as if he had picked up another knock. He has been a very strong player for the Gs in the central role.
Then early in the second half Fleet Spurs Jack Cleeveley then got booked for arguing with the ref, after an overly strong tackle.
The ref did not have a particularly good game in my opinion. Amongst other things he ended up booking Lekan for falling over a player on the ground. Most strange. But things got worse as more players were getting booked.
Darren then was replaced by Kai Francis and a few minutes later Kurt was replaced by Andrei.
Sam Taylor also got booked as the game sort of ping ponged from one end of the pitch to the other, without a lot of football being played in between. Fleet were starting to get more into the game and had a few attacks without causing Adrian any real problems.
Then, after Gs mounted some pressure of their own, Josh got onto the ball on the right side and cut his way in towards goal and although he was under the close attention of a defender, still managed to hit a good low shot that beat the home keeper at his near post, to get the Gs in front again. This time I failed to record the whole attack. Sorry again.
Sam Boultwood was replaced by Elijah Carter who went into the midfield as Connor Blanchard returned to the right back position.
The Gs managed to hold out for the final 15 or so minutes without too much to worry them and are now on a roll with two consecutive wins under their belt. It was not always pretty, but the Gs have shown that they can battle to get the result when they have to.
Really pleased for the lads at the result. They have worked really hard so far this season. Well done to Phil and his impressive backroom team set up.
Apologies again for the cock ups with the camera. It is more difficult than it seems, so hats off again to the likes of Giles who has recorded some stunning photos over the years.
I have let Lekan and Josh down. I have let the club down, but most of all, I have let myself down. Must try harder.
