Eversley & California (0) 1 – 2 (1) Godalming
What a relief it is to report that the Gs came away with all three points after they dominated the first half, but yet again having gone ahead conceded yet again on the break against the run of play.
But, this time we got a chance in the last few minutes for Josh to latch on to the ball around the middle of the park, turn his marker before pushing the ball beyond him and use his pace to attack the goal before putting the game to bed.
The three points from this game move the Gs from 15th to 10th place in the league at this volatile time of the season.
How many times have I reported that the Gs got the first goal? I think in nearly all the games so far. Once again, only to have the lead cancelled out early in the second half from a break out of defence. Again, we had several good opportunities to increase the score during that first half and basically to put the game beyond doubt, but we could not take the opportunities presented.
As far as I am aware all the travelling Gs found their way safely to the pitch, avoiding the potholes that on our last visit threatened to gobble up any unprepared souls who lost their footing in the car park. In fairness there has been a lot more money spent at Fox Lane and there are even lights now along the side of the indoor cricket hall, so there was no need for the tracker dogs to go in search of lost spectators
Adrian Giles was in goal, Captain Rory Sellick popped up at right back and Nathan Morris at left back. Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre back pairing. Connor Blanchard, Luca Soanella and Sam Boultwood in the midfield. Elijah Carter was behind Josh Ogunseye and Lekan Osideko.
On the bench were Relu Oprea, Sam Wade, Kai Francis and Andrew Muresan.
Once again, the Gs started well, but they got a rather tough welcome from their guests when only 10 minutes in the first yellow card was shown to the hosts number 11 for a fierce tackle. There were more to come.
The Gs were pressing their hosts and Lekan got in a good shot at close range, which the home keeper managed to beat out and push the ball around for a corner. E & C have their keeper to thank for keeping them in it. He played well throughout. Shots were on for Luca and Lekan and even Ben May got a sniff, but none of them could find the net.
Once again however the numerous chances that the Gs created, they were not converted.
Towards the end of the first half the Gs got another free kick from a rather dangerous tackle by the E& C number 8, which on another day could have been a straight red with studs up and uncontrolled. On this occasion it only brought a finger wagging from the ref.
Luca set it up and curled his left footed shot towards the far post where Lekan was coming in. He brought a couple of defenders with him and that probably confused the home keeper as the shot appeared to miss everyone and snuck just inside the post.
1 - 0 to the Gs at half time.
Early in the second half for once the Gs broke quickly with Lekan down the left flank. He outpaced everyone (except Josh, who was flying up the middle of the pitch). On the edge of the area Lekan slipped the ball beautifully through to Josh who got a powerful shot away, but the home keeper managed to save it.
Nathan picked up a yellow card for a clumsy tackle near the halfway line.
E&C number 8 got a yellow for an extraordinarily late tackle yards after the ball had gone.
Josh then got down the right side and delivered a ball that went right across the face of the hosts goal, where both Lekan and Elijah were lurking, but could not get a contact.
Gs got a couple more opportunities where the home keeper again kept them in it. Plenty of pressure coming from the Gs.
But, at the other end, E& C broke forward and swung the ball from the left to right of the pitch and eluded the Gs defence, aided by an unfortunate slip. This left a home forward bearing down on Adrian’s goal with the Gs keeper managing a great block with his legs. But, unfortunately the rebound fell well for the forward, who converted his second opportunity.
The Gs continue to press for a result with a great build up, but Luca’s final shot went over.
Andrei comes on to replace Elijah. 15 minutes later Kai Francis also joined the fray at the expense of Nathan Morris.
For the first time the Gs defence looks unsettled, as the home side try to put more pressure on the Gs goal.
But then a ball out of the Gs defence finds its way towards Josh on the halfway line. He turned and pushed the ball beyond the defender, who had no chance of catching him, before smashing a low drive into the net as Josh approached the advancing home keeper.
The Gs back in front. What a relief for the travelling support. But, would they be able to hold on to it?
There were a couple of uncomfortable moments before the referee finally blew for full time and great to get 3 points again.
Great team effort all round. Lekan really did a great job in defending as well as up front. Ben May again was impressive in the heart of the defence, while captain Rory once again led by example and Boults controlled the midfield really well.
Well done to every single one of them.
