Godalming 1 (1) – (0) 1 British Airways
Once again it was the Gs who found the net first, only to have the lead cancelled out again, this time early in the second half.
Last week we were sweltering in the sun at the Bill Kyte Stadium, but this week it was time for the winter coats and scarves to be donned. Bovril weather. There were one or two of the recent Gs squad missing. Sam Taylor, Connor Young and Kai Francis to name just three. A few others who we have not seem for a while.
Adrian Giles was in goal, Dexter Skipp at right back and Nathan Morris at left back. Ben May and Rory Sellick the centre backs. Connor Blanchard, Luca Soanella and Sam Boultwood in the midfield. James Robertson was up front with Ellis Lentil and Elijah carter for support. On the bench were Josh Ogunseye and Lekan Osideko apparently being rested, alongside Relu Oprea, Sam Wade and Andrei Muresan.
The visitors were sporting very colourful luminous pink shirts that possibly avoid the need for floodlights on evening games. This did however clash a little with the all luminous green of their keeper.
Once again, the Gs started brightly, pressing their guests in the first few minutes without creating any clear-cut chances. However, it was the visitors who got the first serious shot on target when the broke down their right, but Adrian had it covered and blocked the shot with his legs.
Elijah had a long-range effort, but it was over the bar, as the Gs continued to develop the pressure as they attacked the goal at the road end.
Gs won a number of corners and from one on the left Ben May got the first header in towards goal and James Robertson headed this on again goalward, but the visiting keeper managed to get a hand to it to save.
Gs won a free kick on the right, which Connor delivered into the 6 yard box where the keeper could only partially parry it and the ball finds its way towards Elijah Carter who hit it low into the net to open the scoring for the Gs after about 30 minutes.
The first yellow card after some rather lumpy tackles from both sides went to BA No 7 for a pretty sickening head height bodycheck on Luca. Fortunately, he recovered from it after receiving attention on the pitch. The first yellow card to the Gs followed shortly after when Connor was booked for a tackle that looked fine to me as he made good contact with the ball in a fifty-fifty challenge well before his opponent fell over his leg. But that is the way it goes some times.
From a free kick to the Gs some way outside the penalty area Luca hit a good shot low around the wall, but the man in shocking green went full stretch to save and did well to hold it.
James was working hard upfront and almost got his reward. He met a low ball in from the wing, jumping to make contact, inside the 6-yard box, only for the ball to hit his other dangling leg while he was in the air.
So, at half time the home side were 1-0 up, but could easily have been further ahead.
As the second half started, the Gs looked up for it and were again pressing their visitors goal when they lost position in the middle of the pitch and the BA No 7 was targeted with a long ball, which he gathered a headed towards goal hitting a high shot which found the top far corner of Adrian’s net with a strong angled shot. Now 1 – 1.
BA now introduced two subs. Shortly after this Elijah was subbed off for Lekan to make an appearance. He got straight in to the game and made several runs at the opposition.
Again, the Gs pressed and delivered some good build up play without getting a final shot on target.
Lekan got in another couple of shots but without the power he would have liked making it reasonably easy for the visiting keeper to save.
Ellis who had had a good game, was then subbed off for Josh to join the fray upfront. Straight away he took the initiative linking with Lekan and attacked after going past several defenders.
Try as they might the Gs could not find the winner and at times in their effort to get forward meant that they were stretched in defence at times when the visitors broke quickly and attacked down the favoured right wing.
But at the end it was all square on 1-1 so the points will be shared.
It is a welcome return to Michael’s socially distanced and sanitised stats:-
