On the last occasion Shoreham left the sunny Sussex Coast and ventured into Surrey they shipped 9 goals at Alfold in the FA Cup. I just wonder if Gees can get somewhere near emulating that target in today's FA Vase tie! Give it a good try. COYG's

Godalming 3 (1) - (1) 3 Shoreham (Shoreham win 5-3 on penalties)
The Gs went out of the FA Vase after this strange game, which see-sawed one way and another, but in the end, having not been able to convert a couple of chances at the end, it was down to the penalty shoot-out.
Adrian was between the posts, with Dexter Skipp at right back and Nathan Morris at left back. Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre backs. Rory was restored to the midfield with Connor Blanchard and a new name in Luca Scanella. Josh Ogunseye and Lekan Osideko were the wide players with James Robertson in the number 9 shirt. On the bench were Connor Young, Ellis Lentil, Relu Oprea, Kurt Greenwood, Elijah Carter and Kai Francis.
It could not have started better for the Gs really, as they dominated the opening minutes of the session. It got even better when, at around 10 minutes in, the Gs won a corner on their right flank. Connor Blanchard delivered it in and James Robertson got a header in on target that the visiting keeper parried and the ball bounced back out. Robertson made no mistake with the second attempt with a powerful header from close range.
A little while after this the referee had a long chat with Lekan, before he then spoke to the two managers in the dugouts. No idea what this was about.
The Shoreham number 9 goes into the ref’s book for a rash tackle. Only a few minutes later the Gs Sam Taylor also goes into his book for a rather clumsy tackle.
The Gs continued to press, but without any further success in front of goal.
Rather against the run of play the visitors broke quickly through the middle of the Gs defence before the ball was played out to their number 8 on the right side of the goal. He took his chance well, hitting a good angled shot past Adrian Giles to bring the score all square, with 7 or 8 minutes to go before halftime.
This invigorated the visitors and they came more into the game.
Adrian was called upon to make a good reaction save when a corner from the right was headed on to beyond the far post, where a visiting forward hit a powerful shot on the volley. Adrian got down well to hold it.
So, it was 1-1 at the half way point.
After the restart rather strangely, Ben May was penalised for what looked to me to be an excellent defensive tackle wide of the Gs penalty area, where he clearly played the ball into touch before the Shoreham player fell over him.
However, it was given and the defensive wall was set up. The shot was taken and appeared to be mishit with little power, but somehow it seemed to go through the Gs defence and trickle into the net for the visitors second. Maybe there was a deflection? Shoreham 2-1 up now.
To be honest, it seemed to me that there was a lack of football being played by both sides at this stage. Not the most impressive performance so far after some very good performances lately. But the Gs were a bit below par and Lekan, who took quite a battering on Wednesday night, was taken off and Ellis Lentil came on.
Ellis battled his way in from the left and hit a good shot that whistled past the far post with the visiting keeper at full stretch.
Phil went for some more tactical changes bringing on Connor Young for Luca in the middle and soon after Kai Francis also came on besides James Robertson upfront, sacrificing Nathan Morris, as the Gs went for just three at the back.
Almost immediately the visitors capitalised upon this and attacked down the middle and went 3 – 1 up while the Gs defence seemed to be a little at sea.
Now, with a mountain to climb, the Gs started to get back into it and started to win more territory and possession. Then, with about 20 minutes left to go, the Gs where awarded a free kick on their left, which was played in and after the first bounce Kai Francis timed his run beautifully to head home and give a much-needed lift to the Gs. Getting exciting now!
After the Gs won a corner on their right flank, it was floated in and Ben May at the far post got on the end of it, to head home and level the score. Really pleased for Ben as he has worked so hard for the team and been so influential this season. Hope this is the first of many for him and the Gs.
Now we are all square again with 7 or 8 minutes left to play.
The Gs had a chance to put the game to bed when Connor Young managed to break through the visiting defence and found himself one on one with the Shoreham keeper, well beyond the 6-yard box. The keeper managed to get a strong hand to the ball to parry Connor’s shot, which went forward, but did not fall kindly for Ellis Lentil who was in attendance, but he could not get a decent touch on it with the keeper stranded and the goal beckoning. That is the way it goes sometimes.
No extra time in this competition unfortunately, as I think the Gs had the upper hand again, and looked like they had more in the tank. But, when the referee blew for full time, it was down to the penalty shoot-out. It did not end well for the Gs, but they have to put it behind them now and concentrate upon the League fixture against British Airways next Saturday.

I think the wind played a big part in the lack of flowing football and it was a shame that one of the best challenges of the day was penalised so harshly, as it turned out. Gs didn't really deserve to go 3-1 down - we were certainly not 2 goals worse - and it was only right (and to the lads' great credit) that we pulled it back. Was especially impressed with Connor Blanchard who had a storming game throughout and rightly deserved his Man of the Match, and with the depth in our squad given we were already without a couple of regulars. Hopefully with no midweek match the lads can recuperate well and be more than ready for BA on Saturday. COYGs.
