Godalming 3 – 1 Chessington and Hook
A win and 3 points for the Gs, which we hope means that we are as we thought/hoped going to be at the very least a competitive team in the league this season. A sparkling hat trick from Josh Ogunseye gave the home supporters just what they wanted and it was no less than he deserves.
It was, yet again due to injuries, a changed line-up for the home team, as they started the game playing towards the road end during the first half.
Unfortunately, it was one of those bitty games, which had little flow to it, but lots of physicality and far too many stoppages. Including both managers being booked.
Relu Oprea in goal for the injured Adrian Giles, Dexter Skip moved in to the right back position (as Sam Wade also has a knock). Ben May and Sam Taylor the centre backs with Nathan Morris at left back. George Peterkin, Rory Sellick and Connor Blanchard in the midfield with James Robertson at number nine and Lekan Osideko and Josh Ogunseye the wide men in the starting line-up.
On the bench were Dom Hardisty, Kai Francis, Elijah Carter, Connor Young and Andrei Muresian.
After the terrific performance against Farnham (who now sit at the top of the league) on Tuesday, particularly in the first half of that game, which was a good as anything I have seen for a while, this was a scrappy affair with little continuity. However Gs showed moments of good passing in their build up play and Lekan got in a good shot that went just over the bar.
The C&H number 2 was given the first yellow of the game after a foul on Lekan and shortly after pulled up when advancing down the wing and was subbed off after receiving attention on the pitch.
Ruggs even seemed to get his name in the ref’s book for commenting on what looked like a pretty blatant handball right in front of him, that the ref did not see.
Next the ref went and had a chat with the G Army chorus behind Relu’s goal. Perhaps asking when they were releasing their greatest hits album?
Then towards the end of the first half, following a corner on the Gs right flank, the ball was played clear to the far side before being knocked back into the box and headed towards goal by James Robertson. Josh stepped in and hit the ball home to open the scoring despite the C&H keeper getting a hand to it.
Minutes later he hit a peach of a cross from the left that Lekan dived headlong towards and got a great contact, but unfortunately for him the visiting keeper got down quickly and somehow batted the ball away with his right hand. Lekan has done so much hard work and deserves a few breaks in front of goal, which I am sure will come soon. 1-0 to the Gs at half time.
George Peterkin comes off to be replaced by Andrei at the start of the second half.
Josh then got scythed down in the middle of the pitch, but that brought nothing from the man in black, however he spotted something he did not like in a challenge from Rory, who did go into his book. Perhaps it was his aftershave?
James Robertson came off after a good battling performance and that made an opening for Elijah Carter to come on in a sort of No10 role.
The visiting number 5 then hit a free kick straight at Andrei’s back as he retreated. This brought both of them yellow cards. Perhaps the ref was going for some sort of record. Dexter then went in the refs book, probably as he was feeling a bit left out of things.
Next into the refs book goes the C&H manager. Perhaps he is just trying to organise a party?
Elijah chases down a ball out on the Gs left and with a bit of tricky footwork deliver a great ball into the edge of the 6-yard box, which Andrei just fails to get any contact with.
Ben May also finds his way into the ref’s book. There can’t be many players who haven’t been listed by now, so he might as well. I’m a bit disappointed that I did not get booked. Is there something wrong with me?
Lekan once again does a lot of hard work down the right wing and crosses sweetly for Josh who somehow weaves his way past three defenders, two of whom end on their backsides, before he puts the ball in the back of the net.
Lekan comes off having done a great job to give Kai a run out up front.
Then somehow as the visitors mount an attack at the far end the ball seems to creep inside Relu’s post, which seemed to wrong foot him. So, perhaps there was a deflection on the way before the ball trickled in. So now 2-1.
But we need not have worried as that man Josh latched on to a gem of a pass through the middle from Elijah, before slipping the ball low past the advancing keeper for his third of the game. 3 – 1 to the home team.
Under normal conditions that would have led to a good few drinks being consumed in the bar, but these days that just cannot happen. It was a scrappy game, but the whole Gs squad did a great job. The defence looked pretty good and the midfield worked their proverbial socks off. A great team battling performance with a good team ethic developing. Well done to all the lads and Phil’s backroom team as well for getting us to where we are.

So, the Gs now have the tempting thought of an FA Vase match against Shoreham next Saturday after we go to Westside on Wednesday night (at Colliers Woods ground) just off the A3.
