A New Start ...again
This terrible pandemic has caused untold misery throughout the World, but, perversely, Godalming has been the unwitting beneficiary of one tiny chink of light that appeared briefly in these unrelenting dark clouds.
Just when all seemed lost and we seemed certain to lose our place in the Combined Counties setup, the unprecedented cancellation of last season has given the club another chance to build and grow,
How often did the legendary Phoenix rise from the ashes?
In 20 AD, the Ancient Roman philosopher, Pliny The Elder, wrote that the mythical bird regenerated itself every five hundred years (Pliny the Younger didn’t give a monkey’s and wished someone would hurry up and invent an X Box).
Godalming can’t wait five hundred years. Godalming can’t wait five hundred days.
The Gs have had an asylum of managers over the last few years, all of whom moved on for various reasons, some to bigger things, some for personal reasons, some because it didn’t work out for them and some because they had absolutely no idea what they were doing and had only been attracted to the ground by the lights.
The remarkable thing is that in nearly all cases, good or bad, when these custodians departed for greener 4G, they didn’t just grab the petty cash and a stapler like anyone sensible, they took huge swathes of our players instead (even Dan Turkington, who wasn’t even with us long enough to take his coat off, managed to chuck a couple of midfielders in his boot before leaving the carpark).
This has resulted in a terrible cycle of the club constantly having to start from scratch, giving a near impossible task for any new managerial contestant willing to start with a squad sheet known locally as ‘Blankety Blank’.
Obviously, we need a period of stability and growth so let’s keep the Phoenix flying for a decent period this time and, hopefully, with Phil and his team at the helm, we have an excellent chance to do that.
This season has to be about building a team, an atmosphere and a structure that makes players, management, officials and supporters all want to stay at the club and be proud to be a G.
So, let’s concentrate on the positives, of which there are many, e.g. We have more regular supporters than anyone else who hasn’t been occupied by the Germans.
More than 1 in 20 injuries are caused by celebrating goals on the pitch, so we should be pretty injury free this season.
It’s going to be great.
