Many thanks to Dave Ewing who boldly went where no man had been before and wrote some super reports in my absence.
Godalming 0 – 5 Jersey (League Cup)
This League Cup clash bringing the Jersey Bulls back to the Bill Kyte Stadium drew a remarkable number of spectators on a night when the temperature was dropping to just about freezing and the rain was coming down.
But as usual we made our way more in hope than expectation to see what the two juxtaposed teams could provide. The visitors have yet to drop a point in this League where they are clearly way better than any other side in the League and the home team struggling to pick up points, which they desperately need for survival.
There were yet more new names on the Godalming team sheet and some of those we had seen before were I am sure qualified to play for the youth side. But there was no lack of energy as we started the game with Dylan Bonner in the number 9 shirt and Dan Holden wide and Sam Slater looked impressive in the number 8 shirt.
Despite conceding an early goal the GS stayed in touch during the first 40 minutes. The first corner inside the first fifteen minutes of the game saw a failure of the Gs defence to get a head on the ball and allowed a free header from the visitors, which Adrian did well to block, but the ball ran to a Jersey player for a close-range tap-in.
The Bulls are so well organised and strong in defence it was hard to get the ball through to the pacey Jordan Cavender. On the couple of occasions, he was given half a chance he was dealt with by some strong challenges.
As the game edged towards half time Jerseys second goal came again from a poorly defended corner which ended with the ball being bundled in. On top of that Andy Tarrant was sin binned for dissent.
That was a cue for Jerseys third goal within a couple of minutes when the Jersey number 8 weaved his way through the home defence before slipping the ball past Adrian for a fine individual goal. So, in the space of a few minutes we had gone from a respectable 1-0 down to 3 - 0 down at half time. But we like being 3- 0 down don’t we? Bagshot got a shock a few weeks back, but unfortunately there was no way back this time.
Sam Slater was subbed off quite early in the second half
We battled away in the second half, but could not get any joy or even threaten the visitor’s goal. Darren went off also, I believe with a niggle. He made a couple of great little breaks through the centre, but the Bulls defenders are big and got away with some hefty challenges again.
In the end the score ended 0 -5 after a fourth goal that looked suspiciously offside and a fifth which again came from some good play in the middle of the park where the Gs were largely outgunned. George Smith, Sean Tarrant and Ollie Ballam coming on in the second half.
There were some good performance again from Adrian in goal and the ever-inspirational Rory Sellick, who dropped back to centre back in the short absence of Andy Tarrant and stayed there when he returned. He made some fine interceptions and last-ditch tackles.
Charlie Chennel has developed into an accomplished player and developing his confidence.
Raishan Francis also showed some really nifty footwork at times when he ventured forward going through the visitor’s midfield on several occasions. He was swapping with Jordan Cavender quite effectively I thought. But a side that has only conceded 7 goals in 24 games in this League is exceptional. We needed something exceptional and try as they might, simply could not deliver that on the night.
When we met Jersey at home at the start of the season the result then was also 0 – 5 but at least on that occasion we hit the post and made a bit more of a game of it.
Anyway, the game against E&C this Saturday is far more important to us, so I hope that we are able to field a rather stronger squad for that game. It is a six pointer if ever there was one.
