Only 11 players, 3 of them goalies and 2 school kids playing, don’t know what Paul said to them at half time but well done to the manager and the players.

Bagshot 3 - 3 Godalming
Football is “ A funny old game.” Last week we dominated a game and were three goals up moments from the end of normal time. Somehow (and I really don’t know how, we conspired to concede three goals within 5 minutes of extra time played. So, we went home desperately disappointed as I am sure the young Gs squad also did.
This week things could really not have started any worse, as when we arrived at Krooner Park manager Paul was looking decidedly glum and pondering a team sheet that featured no more than eleven players (so no subs at all) including three goalkeepers and four from the under 18’s. Six players had called in unavailable or ill. Darren is still suspended.
Of course, we lost Ben Bauchop last week to a nasty ankle injury, which looks like he will be out for the foreseeable future. So sad for such an influential player and I am sure we all wish him well for a speedy recovery.
But we did have the inspirational Rory Sellick back from his skiing holiday thankfully all in one piece at the heart of the defence alongside Charlie Chennell who has grown so well into the team and even weighed in with a couple of goals in the last few games.
Despite a really nasty looking bruise and lump on his leg Dom Hardisty was back at right back with Callum Lawrence at left back. Adrian Giles was captain for the day between the posts.
That allowed Jordan Cavender to play further up the pitch alongside Ollie (or Oily as it was shown on the team sheet) Ballam and Elija Carter, who we have not seen for a while. It turned out to be quite a return too. Tommy Reeves was wide on one side with Sharif Madeebo on the other and Oliver Ford up front.
It looked like it would be a long afternoon when the home side went one goal up after only 5 minutes from a good build up and an angular shot that crept inside Adrian’s far post.
However the lads got into the game and it was on 27 minutes in that Oliie Ballam managed to hook a massive punt from wide out on the right with so much spin on it that the ball ended up dropping well behind him and in front of Adrian who was hindered by being unable to handle the ball and a Bagshot forward was able to head home from close range. A great shame for Ollie as he had done so well looking like a fleet footed winger and delivering a great cross in the first half as well as tackling and chasing everything that came his way.
Then, as usual, we conceded just before half time after a slip-up in defence. We must break this habit.
So, at half time we were 3 - 0 down and I suppose considering the nature of the squad with two goalkeepers and a handful of youngsters playing in the outfield that was not that surprising. I reckon most spectators thought there was going to be a glut of goals to come.
But those two Ollies gave everything. Ollie Ford battled with two lumps in central defence for the home side playing as he played as a target man feeding the ball out to the wide players. While Ollie B was showing pace that we did not know he had and putting himself about.
Paul and his assistant Kevin must have found some exceptional words of encouragement in the dressing room
We came under pressure for sure, but the home side had trouble getting shots on target and when they did they found Adrian was on form for the Gs and Charlie and Rory, as always, were putting their bodies on the line with blocks and tackles. It was no surprise that Dom was doing the business as he has done doggedly and calmly for a few seasons at the back. But we have found another talent in Callum Lawrence who was quick and tireless in defence. Slotting him in at the back allowed Jordan Cavender the chance to get forward and attack the home defence with his pace and determination.
Having battled away through most of the second half without conceding I think most of us felt that keeping the score down to three goals would be a major achievement for these young lads. Tommy (The Torso) Reeves showed great energy all over the pitch acting like a human dynamo chasing and tackling in the midfield when not involved in the attack.
Then, with about ten minutes of normal time to go, Jordan used his pace to chase down the home keeper who was caught out wide of his goal. He won the ball and was able to place the ball in the net from an acute angle to give the lads the chink of light that they needed. A great result for Jordan scoring his first goal of many I hope for the Gs. Thoroughly deserved. He has worked so hard in defence and going forward.
Around five minutes later, with the Gs having won a few free kicks, the home keeper punched clear to just beyond Elija who delivered a great inspired overhead kick, from near the edge of the area, that beautifully cleared the home keeper and brought us back to 3-2. This reinforced in the Gs squad that they were in with a chance of something from the game.
The Gs pressed and won a further corner. Ollie Ford was still running himself into the ground and was suffering with what looked like cramp. But he took up a position near the near post. The ball came in and Ollie back headed it into the edge of the 6 yard box where Elija headed home convincingly just under the bar to level the score. The lads thoroughly deserved their celebrations led by the ever-enthusiastic Rory and Charlie.
A great battling performance from the whole of this young squad who worked their socks off.
Perhaps we should field a team with even more goalies in the future!.
A few words on the efforts from the G army as well are deserved. The support for the team was terrific throughout the game, as usual. Once the first goal went in for the Gs they became even more vocal and I am convinced that that helped to spur the squad on as well as to rattle the home side. Cranewife was doing a fantastic job urging the lads on whilst restraining Hendo from streaking across the pitch in nothing but his excitement.
It is only a point, but every point counts and it came against a mid-table team who have just ended an eight game unbeaten run, losing last week 2-1 to Farnham who are in second place.
You can see the goals on the Gs Facebook page.

Bovril status: After a quick tour of the Camberley drink outlets we finally stumbled on the little white burger stand where the lovely young lady informed us that yes- she had some Bovril. We ordered an eye watering 4 cups of the stuff- a record for the Camberley ground- which she expertly prepared with both clockwise and anticlockwise expert stirring. No sludge, no eyes watering at the end. rather like the result- perfect!

Would loved to have gone to the game today but my brother advised against it. What’s with playing three goalkeepers,?

On the playing side Paul was let down very badly on the Friday evening by 6 or 7 players. Darren Wheeler was serving the last match of his ban. A few of those should be back this week with maybe one or two new faces. It was a tough ask but the team played out of their skin and cam away with a well deserved point.
