Godalming 1 – 2 Sandhurst
Thanks to Dave Ewing for agreeing to do write up on last week’s game at very short notice. A fine write up it was too. So, thanks for that Dave.
There were more new names on the Gs team sheet again, but a very welcome return to Reece Weekes, Charlie Chenell, Andrew Tarrant and captain Rory Sellick. No Darren Wheeler of course, nor for the next couple of games.
The first half was a pretty even affair with the G squad as you would expect looking a bit rough around the edges for the first ten minutes or so, as they started to learn each other’s names and discussed their individual views on Brexit.
Then they started to get into the swing of things and had the first proper shot of the game from Richie Mbele, but it was not hit quite as sweetly as he can and it was fairly easy for the visiting keeper to cover. Not long after Adrian at the other end had to deal with a similar long-range attempt.
Andrew Tarrant seemed to fit in well alongside Rory in the absence of Reegan Scotcher. Reegan and Rory have become a pretty good pairing considering that neither of them are centre backs and are keen to get forward at every opportunity. Reece, Richie and Ben did their stuff in the middle of the pitch. All in all it was a pretty even affair and the sides went in at half time with the score at 0 - 0. I mentioned to Andrew that at least we had missed the half time hoodoo.
But that did not last long, as within minutes of the restart as the visitors attacked down their right flank and delivered a high cross Adrian appeared to have it covered and put a hand up to help it over the bar. But the ball looped a couple of metres in the air and landed in front of the far post setting up an easy tap in for Sandhurst to break the deadlock and go 0 - 1 up.
At least some of the Gs supporters were a bit slow to return from the warmth of the bar and missed this goal.
The Gs were doing OK at the other end and Reece got in a shot that went just wide.
Sandhurst looked quite well drilled, but were also much bigger and more physical in almost every position on the pitch. This made it so much more difficult for the home side to retain possession.
There was a bit of a skirmish in the gloom at the far end of the pitch as Dom made what looked to me to be a well-timed tackle, at pace, but the afters ensued with others joining in as Dom walked away. In the end the ref chose to book Dom and one of the Sandhurst guys.
Ben Bauchop received some attention on the pitch and eventually had to be replaced so the Gs where down to ten men again. A shame as Ben has proved to be a very strong player in the middle of the park who can also score goals.
About half hour in to the second half Sandhurst were awarded a penalty as one of their players went down in the penalty area and they were two goals up.
Jordan Cavender got sent to the sin bin so the Gs were again down to ten men.
Despite this we saw the best bit of football in the build up between Reece and Sharif as they passed between each other and made their way smartly up the pitch. In the end Sharif pulled the ball in neatly from the left, but unfortunately Reece on this occasion could only lift the ball over the bar. The move deserved a goal.
Charlie Chennel came on. Captain Rory came off after another great performance at the back.
Gs kept trying to get the ball into the corners and in the end won a corner that was delivered really well and met even better by Charlie Chennell leaping like a proverbial salmon to head the ball powerfully home. Have not seen a header like that for the Gs since Ollie Stevens.
Reece came of to be replaced by George Masella, but no equaliser could be found.
