Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads my reports so it was good to know that Cranewife was missing the Fleet Spurs one as he cheerily greated me over the programme stall.
Anyway here it is. Apologies I did it ages ago, just forgot to put on here it seems.
Godalming 1 – 3 Fleet Spurs
To look at the score line you would think that this was a reasonably comfortable win for Fleet Spurs, but it was a pretty close affair for me. Make no mistake this was not the same Fleet team that we beat at their place 2 - 1. I am told by the Fleet guys that they have added 6 new players recently and hence their improvement in form. Ross tells me 5 of them from Westfield. They comprehensively beat third placed Farnham Town 5 -1 in their previous match so it was going to be a challenge.
Gs kicked off with Jordan Knight in goal, Dom Hardisty at right back Ryan Villa at left back Joe Lewis and Curtis Osano as the centre backs. Darren Wheeler again restored to the midfield alongside Jack Howard and Jake Heard and Jack Cleeveley behind Donte Lodge-Francis and Ollie Stevens.
On the bench alongside Matt Kerbey was Charlie Chennel, Richie Mbele, Kenny Kassabante, Abdallah Ismail.
The visitors wasted little time in out flanking the Gs defence down their left-hand side playing some neat quick give and go passes before ending with a close range shot to put them in the lead within 7 minutes on the refs first whistle.
Fortunately, the Gs drew level only about 5 minutes later when Darren floated a great ball in and the visiting keeper could not hold it under pressure from Ollie and the ball came out to Donte Lodge Francis to put it away convincingly. I am really pleased for Donte as he has worked really hard up front holding the ball up often with his back to goal and he shows great footwork and works in defence as well.
It was pretty close for the rest of the first half and towards the end Jack Howard hit one of his “specials” from outside the area. The visiting keeper parried it and Ollie Stevens as usual was on hand, but his shot was half blocked by defenders and so had little power in it and the keeper saved at his second attempt. Had the Gs gone in at half time in the lead who knows what may have happened.
At the start of the second half Ryan Villa was substituted for Richie Mbelle as the Gs appeared to go for more of a 3 at the back set-up with Darren covering the left wing.
The Fleet number eleven then showed how good he was with an individual effort where he cut in from the left having beaten a few players and then beat Jordan with a low shot into the far corner.
Kenny Kassabante came on for Darren.
The Gs continued to press and it looked to me as if Donte had a pretty good shout for a penalty, but the ref did not agree and waived play on. The protests from Jack Cleeveley brought him a booking.
Disappointingly we conceded a third at the end when a Fleet player was allowed a free header from a corner. The one poor bit of play by the Gs for me. But otherwise a pretty good game and performance. The lads gained a succession of corners at the end and had a goal line clearance, but could not make their pressure tell.
On to Kensington Borough next week.
COYGs
No stats this week as Michael was at a party in downtown Basingstoke and...
NO BOVRIL as the Oven Door had clean run out!
(I am assured that the Bovril situation will be rectified by next week.)
