Fleet Spurs 1 - 2 Godalming Town
Fortunately for the G’s their first half performance and two good goals from Ollie Stevens where enough to see them take all three points from this re-scheduled fixture and provided a late and welcome Christmas gift of three points taking us up a place in the league.
The first attempt to play this fixture at Kennels Lane a few weeks back, with the forbearance of the referee, saw a small band of G’s including Les working on the pitch alongside the Fleet Spurs guys to try to reduce the standing water on the pitch. Whilst that endeavour initially seemed to be paying off, the weather had the final word as the heavens opened yet again and caused the match to be postponed, just minutes before the delayed kick off.
No such problems today, just the usual interest in seeing who was present and available for the squad. On arrival there was good news that the G’s human dynamo Jack Howard was wearing the kit and recovering from the injury he succumbed to last week at Dorking. It was clear after a quick work out under the watchful eye of G’s Physio Rebecca he was only going to be on the bench. Also, it was really good to see that Ashley Wright was back as was Chris Burke and Joe Lewis in one of the new away kits that we now seem to have several of. Mercifully not the pale blue one, but the yellow and black.
In front of Jordan Knight was a back four of Taylor Davies, Curtis Osano (wearing the captain’s armband) Joe Lewis and Ashley Wright.
Chris Burke and Reegan Scotcher were in the midfield boiler room with Darren Wheeler and Ollie Stevens the wide players and Jack Cleevely up front alongside Richard Achampong.
Craig Adu-Adjay was back from suspension and on the bench alongside Charlie Chennell, Liam Gadd, Matt Kerbey and Jack Howard.
Again, the G’s were on top from the start with Curtis going close with a good header from a corner in the first few minutes.
Shortly after Richard battled well in the midfield to win possession and threaded a good ball forward to Ollie Stevens who latched on to the ball and finished calmly low into the net. The G’s were on top and applying more pressure. Richard had a shot blocked on the line.
Towards the end of the first half Ollie put the G’s 2-0 up when he used his pace to beat the home keeper to a ball on the edge of the area sliding the ball into the net.
The G’s seemed to have the game in their control as they left the pitch at half time.
At the start of the second half they continued to dominate and Ollie again came close on a couple of occasions with a possible hat trick looming, working his way into the 6-yard box, but was unable to convert his chances. Richard also had a chance or two, but the G’s could not increase their advantage.
Then, to their credit, the home side started to commit more men forward and it started to work for them and about twenty-seven minutes into the second half they got a goal back with a good strike from just inside the box.
This “Spur-red” them on and they hit the top of the crossbar from a corner, but although they mounted more attacks towards the end of the game, they could not get too much on target to bother Jordan Knight.
Lots of good performances in the whole G’s squad, Chris Burke, Curtis Osano, Reegan Scotcher all stood out for me as well as Ollie Stevens of course,
A result is a result and the three points most welcome, but we made hard work of it in the end.

Bovril status: Despite not being advertised on the menu the cosy little clubhouse at fleet DID have a tub of powdered magic. Despite the "best before " date possibly being in the last century it tasted pretty decent and was all the more delicious in their lovely Fleet Spurs branded disposable mugs. A touch of class and a notch up from your standard polystyrene receptacle.
